Hello,
I am sure I have read this on here before but nothing came up in my search.
A friend is building up a 9 speed bike and is looking to fit a new chainset. Only 10 speed available apparently.
Is it fine to use a 10 speed Shimano SLX chainset with a 9 speed chain?
A I say, I am pretty sure I have seen this before and I feel it should be ok, I just don't want to recommend he spends without some confirmation.
Thank you!
It'll work fine.
Yep, no problem.
Thanks Peeps! 🙂
The rings are slightly narrower, but they are fine otherwise. My front is a mix and 9spd and 10spd.
Check the ring sizes compared to the 9 speed ones if using a 3x9. 9 speed shimano is normally 44-32-22 but 10 speed 42-32-24 so a 9 speed FD will need to be set up with slightly odd looking clearance to the 42T ring to clear the 32T - ie will be set up where it should be for the 44-32-22 set up. It's only a matter of mm but worth remembering when setting up.
Bigyinn, thanks as I thought.
Thanks Andy! Great info
He has a 3 speed front mech and shifter so he will be going for a triple but purely for shifting compatibility, then losing the big ring in favour of a bash. As far as I aware the FD isn't on the frame.
