I've recently picked up an entry level road/gravel bike at a bargain price. I'll use it for commuting, road, gravel and some bikepacking in the future.
The bike came with mechanical discs and a 9sp Sora groupset, except the cranks which are FSA and square taper. I've never had a square taper setup before but the cranks feel quite noisy, I've adjusted the front derailleur loads but it's still not great. Previous bike was Tiagra all round and seemed much quieter/smoother.
Long term goal would be to switch to a 2x10 hydro GRX/Tiagra setup. But I was thinking of starting that process by upgrading the cranks first and the rest later.
Parts are thin on the ground as we know. But if I was to get a 10 speed Tiagra (4700) crankset, would that work OK with the 9 speed chain and front mech for now?
The Tiagra 4700 cranks are available for about £70, which is probably inflated at the minute due to supply. But the Sora 9 speed cranks (3000) are about the same price! So seems a no brainer if it works? Anyhow know at all?
Thanks

Yes, provided the chain and cassette aren't badly worn. You might want to measure chain wear. If it's badly worn you'll probably have to do it all in one shot.
That's encouraging, thanks. The bike is only a week old so nothing should be worn just yet 😀
I'm purely being nosey!
What bike have you picked up matey?👍
It's a Boardman ADV 8.6 (hides from the "Head V’s Heart" thread :))
They seem out of stock everywhere but randomly my local branch had a display model. British Cycling discount + some additional display model discount made it seem worth a punt at £500.
I like those, particularly at that price.👍
I'd be well chuffed to be honest.
That's a bit of good luck finding a bike!
Anyway, with everything being new, I'd expect it to be quiet and smooth to start with, whatever mix&match groupset it's got.
If it's not the chain rubbing on the derailleurs, and the derailleurs are adjusted up nicely, could it be they've given you the wrong chain? Perhaps they've accidentally fitted a narrower 11 or 12 speed chain?
Or take it back to the shop and see if you can even more money off! 🤑
