Hi,
I'm currently looking to convert my 2x10 setup to 1x on a tight budget. I've bought an SLX M7000 GS 11-speed Rear Derailleur as my current rear derailleur will only take a max of a 36 tooth cog in the rear and also the max any 10 speed derailleur will take is 42 teeth and I would like to go with an 11-46 cassette to help me get up the steep stuff.

I had planned to replace my Deore 10 speed shifter with an 11 speed SLX shifter. However, I have just discovered that Sunrace do an 11-46 10 Speed cassette. So in theory could I use my existing Shimano Deore SL-M610 shifter with the SLX 11 speed derailleur and a 11-46 10 speed cassette?.

I believe many people have successfully done the same with SLX and XT but has anyone done this with SLX and Deore?. Would it be a reliable setup or am I likely to see shifting issues due to the different pull-ratio of the 10 speed shifter?.

Any advice appreciated.

I ran m8000 mech, 10 speed XT shifter and an 11-40 cassette. It worked well.

If an 11sp rear mech works with a 10sp shifter, then I'd assume the reverse would also work?? 11sp shifter with 10sp mech?
Sorry, I know this doesn help your original question Potters 🙁

My understanding is the pull ratio’s of the 10 & 11 speed shifters are different, along with the distance between the cogs on the cassette, chain width and the linear movement of the rear mech... Which boils down to it running out of alignment after a few gear changes and being a sod to set up.

Anecdotal evidence above would suggest it does work, however my feeling is that was more luck than judgement. Can you get a goat link for your current 10 speed mech along with a longer B screw?

EDIT: If you need the gear range for the type of riding you do, why are you reducing the range by going 1x? There was a time when fashion dictated 150mm stems and 300mm wide bars...

Because I've just fitted a dropper post and the 2x dropper lever does not work well with my front gear shifter.

So can anyone else confirm their experience of mixing Deore 10spd with SLX 11 spd? or should I just try and get all 11spd components?.

If memory serves me correctly I’m sure I used an 11sp xt mech with a 10sp shifter/wide range cassette so it should be fine.

That said if you have Shimano brakes I will be removing an I spec 2 xt 11sp shifter tomorrow that’s been used a handful of times if you are interested.

I have Shimano Brakes but they aren't I-spec just band-on, so not sure how they would fit.

The cheap mech hanger extenders from eBay work. My 105 mech couldn't cope with a 40t cassette, fitted a mech extender job jobbed.

Wouldn’t fit then, not to worry, but I’m fairly sure the combo you describe should work and well. I remember it working better than the 10sp that it replaced.

11speed mech on a 10 speed cassette with 10speed shifter is fine and saves you needing to get a wolf/goat/whatever link to get the mech to clear the cassette without so much b-screw that the higher gears are screwed.

Just upgraded my 10 speed 12-36 drive train with an 11speed SLX mech and sunrace 11-46 10 speed cassette. With the light shifting of the 10 speed shifter it's perfect and probably shifts better than my Eagle GX setup on another bike.

Thanks happybiker thats virtually the exact same setup I'm looking to get, so I think i'll bite the bullet and go for it.

Can anyone recommend a budget narrow wide chainring 104BCD 32 Tooth? Been checking the Uberbike Components website regularly, but their black version seems to be constantly sold out.

Also, I presume I'll need a 10 speed chain if going with the 10 speed wide ratio 11-46 cassette, even though the derailleur is 11 speed?

Thanks.
