Back pain and old age has finally caught up with me and I'm finding that the position on my good road bike becomes uncomfortable after about 20 miles. The position on my winter bike however presents no such issues. With this in mind I'm thinking if it is possible to try to mirror the position of the winter bike.. Rather than spend cash on a new frame.
They are however 2 very difficult beasts.. The winter bike is a medium caadx, the good bike is a canyon ultimate in small with a longish stem. Flipping the stem or replacing with something a bit higher rise will help I'm sure but what are the measurements I need to be focusing on? Is it just bar height, reach and saddle to bar drop, or is there something else to consider? Ta
All of my bikes have the same set up. You need four easy numbers. Others are possible, but these are simple to measure
Assuming saddle is same I use an Arione, and here are my numbers
bb spindle to top of saddle 74cm
tip of saddle distance behind bb 5cm
tip of saddle to bar clamp on stem 56cm
drop from top of saddle to top of bars 8cm
get all of these the same and your position will be the same, or close depending on bar width and curve, and of course shifter type, older exposed cables shimano have a 1 cm increase in reach
handling may not be the same, as this depends on geometry. You will be in the same position relative to contact points but these can vary from bike to bike with regards to where the wheels touch the ground!
I have a 18cm headtube bike with a slammed stem and a 15cm head tube bike with spacers.
Bars and saddle on both bikes are in the same place.
I’m looking for a new bike at the moment it will be about 17/18cm headtube as winter/summer is irrelevant. Maybe if I was planning on crit racing a lower position would be handy but otherwise I’m looking to keep the saddle and bars the same.
