Hi I did try and search so sorry if this is old question.
I'm looking at helmets - got a bike after a break and so need a lid.
and I see lots of mention of mips.... is it something I should be thinking I NEED or not? have people ditched lids for mips lids?
also I know there is a basic safety standard and then there is helmets which cover more of the back of the head is there anything else or is it down to just personal preference? so if I see a nice lid in lidl is it likely to do the same as a similar shape from giro or the like just maybe be a bit heavier?

sorry all advice welcome.... I read reviews but they are snapshots, I have read a few helmet threads but always keen for advice. I was thinking of the ixs trail from CRC for like £40, I'm planning xc, no need for full face.

Well, the evidence doesn't show that it's definitely safer.

I would buy the helmet that fits you best with in the price range you want. If that helmet has MIPS, so be it.

I recently bought a Scott Cadence Plus that has MIPS, but that was not part of my buying choice.

where's tjagain?

Mips is designed to prevent rotational forces damaging your neck in an accident. Given the choice of two otherwise well fitting hats I'd go for the MIPS one but otherwise pick a colour you like and get that one.

And I thought that damned CPU family that the latest Linux kernel is failing to build for when using GCC 7. <shakes fist>

I dont like it, but my helmet only comes with it.Its uncomfortable & I dont like the thought of the razor sharp edges scalping me if the padding comes off in a crash, especially the forehead bit.

I'd agree with all the above, none of my helmets have it but if I found 2 I liked, one with MIPS and one without I'd likely buy the MIPS one.

Re. the protection of the Lidl helmet, almost all helmets have similar levels of impact resistance, what you pay for is more vents (cooler head), lighter weight (less strain on the neck) or aerodynamics (faster in theory), how much any of these things bother you is down to you.

I'm very much liking the Carnac and On-One helmets on Planet-X at the moment, they're really good value for money in my eyes. The issue is that you can't try them on unless you're near their warehouse in Rotherham.
