Fancy sticking an SS on the back for the summer but not sure whether to go DD or silkworm.
It's quite rocky on the Malverns but I've only ever cut an Ardent Race EXO so, initially, thinking the silkworm would be OK.
I'm running a Tomahawk DD on the back at the moment which has been bombproof. Just thinking I could shave a bit of weight and have a faster rolling tyre in the process..
Anyone have experience of both?
SS (IMO) is another one of those experiments at the Maxxis factory
It's quite a porker for a back tyre (thick end of 800g IIRC) and too heavy to be classed as fast. It rolls OK but the inertia is noticeable. Rock Razor is better in every way
I use silkworm version it hasn't let me down on the N east granite of Scotland and swiss alps.
tried the RR and hated it, far to sketchy on cornering and on damp days. The side knobs on the ss help greatly where I ride.
26" SS is 740/760g so a good 200g lighter than the Tomahawk DD.

How heavy a tyre is has no bearing on how fast it rolls. Different issue entirely. But most cyclists get confused over it, because weight is easy to measure.
It's a very fast tyre for something that corners so well. The Exo carcass is Minion tough, so heavier duty than the more XC Maxxis tyres.
Amazing how quickly our tyre priorities can change in a few weeks. Looking forward to trying one of these.
can use one of these SS tyres at a trail centre all year round.
Since when is 800g too heavy for a back tyre? It's not an XC race tyre.
I've never really figured out where silkworm and exo are supposed to sit in relation to each other on these tyres, my best stab at it is that exo is sidewalls and silkworm is tread face but that might not be right. But the Exo's not especially tough, it's a bit more puncture resistant than say a snakeskin rock razor ime but still on the lighter protection end.
I think the Minion SS comes in Exo, Exo + Silkworm, and Double Defence versions, so it isn’t Exo or Silkworm, But three levels of increasing puncture resistance.
I think these semi-slicks need tougher casings because they don’t have taller knobs taking the brunt of the abuse from rocks.
What was the Tomohawk like? I’m thinking of getting on to replace the HR2 on the back because I want a faster rolling tyre

745 g for the 27.5 Minion SS, versus 695 g for the Rock Razor in a vastly inferior SnakeSkin carcass. Minion SS grips better too. Would have it over the Schwalbe every time.

Silkworm is an added puncture protection layer - the tyres are still Exo, but they get a Silkworm layer added too. It adds an extra 20g.

*cough* Slaughter *cough*
I went for the silkworm version.
