Hi all,
As above.
I like the idea of running a Minion SS double down on the rear for some pedally stuff in late spring/summer.
However I think I've read that they don't have a particularly good shape on wider rims?
Does anyone have any experiences with this?
Thanks,
Si

I have a non double down (silkworm or something like that) on a 31.8 internal rim and think it works fine. If there were a WT version I’d want it just because but not until the 2.3 is worn out

Schwalbe Rock Razor is a good alternative.

I have run the normal 2.3 Minion SS and 2.3 Minion DHF on a 30mm internal rim and it's absolutely fine.

I've run that exact tyre on a 35mm rim no problems at all.

Is there anywhere doing the dd version cheap? I've only seen the 27.5 dd version at full price online.. Would be keen for this if we have a summer like last year

I remember this thread from last year and after seeing the pic of a minion ss on a 30mm rim showing the side knobs sticking up higher than the central tread, decided to go with the rock razor that was pictured alongside it which looked a nicer profile. I've been happy with my choice.

My buddy runs one on a 27mm rim and it's pretty square on that, the photos of ones on a 30 look worse. I wouldn't. Slaughter or Rock Razor for me.

surely they must be bringing out a WT version of it? unless as its probably classed as a 'xc' tyre they don't feel the need for it to fit 30mm + wide rims maybe?

A WTB Riddler would be another alternative that wouldn't give a funny profile

thing is an SS having a flatter/squarer profile isn't a bad thing. Far from it infact.

sidewalls are a little more exposed on a i30mm rim but the tyres performance is still brilliant.
rolls fast AF
can't clog.
drifts like a boss
and rails like a champ when leant over properly.
what more could you want from a semi slick?
oh... yeah braking performance. braking's over rated TBF 😉

What I really want is a minion side knob and an aggressor centre, better braking than an SS, better cornering than an aggressor

completely missing the point of a SS you mean?

DHRII fits the description of what you say you want.
corners like a DHF, brakes like an anchor

SS rolls better than a DHR2 though, would like something in between.

I ran a DHR2 until it was almost semi slick (with some back brake help) and it was brilliant! So much so that I bought a new one this winter with the intention of trimming down the centre knobs once it dries out..

Sir needs to realise he can't have both atributes

clue: you can't have shit loads of straight line braking grip and super low rolling resitance in the same tread patern design. They're opposite traits.

The DHR2 2.3 in the dual compound and Exo casing doesn’t roll much slower than a Minion SS. The 3C ones and particularly the much knobblier 2.4 versions are a fair bit more draggy.

Minion SS with a slightly taller/more open tread pattern:

and Sir's point is?

coz that E13 tyre is nothing like a minion SS in any way.
it's a hardpack conditions tyre and as such will not offer anywhere near the straight line braking in intermediate/soft conditions of a DHRII. nor will it clear mud as well or roll as fast as a Minion SS.
Or was proving my point your point?

I Run an exo one on my 5010 on 30mm DT Swiss rims feel great, it doesn’t look square, had an ardent race which was so much faster but it rained that one time last summer I went into the woods and backend was all over the place, changed it to minion SS , I’m happy enough with it

I ran one on a 30mm internal rim and I wasn't keen on the square profile. It gave it an odd feel when I leant it right over, like it was reluctant to be leant really far over. I didn't need the edges to engage early, so that was no benefit to me. I was tied to Maxxis then but for a semi slick I'd be getting a Rock Razor.

Thanks for the replies.
Seems a bit mixed really.
I'm going to hold off for a bit, Feb isn't the best time to be putting one on anyway....
