Anyone run a Maxxis Minion DHF (29x2.5) on the rear? I assume it works well, or any noticeable different ?

Why would you choose to do this?

(Fair enough if it's the only tyre you currently have and you just thrashed your rear tyre!)

Why? Rolls faster than some equivalents with similar cornering bite. For most riding braking control is great as well… but it has it’s limits, compared to say a DHR. Often use one on the rear in the summer.

Sam Hill made that popular before DHR2s were released.

I have a spare and wondered how it might ride like.

It's fine. Can be drifty, also pretty abrupt on/off with sliding, it doesn't have any of the good slidey manners and predictability that make the dhr2 so good. Too slow for the amount of grip really but it does the job.

Used to be the default maxxis rear tyre, but only because the original dhr wasn't much good. In 2023, I wouldn't choose it but it wouldn't be the end of the world either

If you’ve got it spare give it a go. Not as good for drive or braking though as the dhr2.

It'll be fine!
I'VE used both DHR and DHF for years on the rear around Calderdale and can't tell the difference, although I'm just an average rider

I run them front and back. My preferred tyre choice (I’ll run a Minion SS in the summer as well). I like how reliable and predictable they are.

Why not?

same cornering knobs as the dhr, good all round tyre which most people won’t be able to push the limits of assuming to have the right compound and correct pressure for your chosen application.

For years the standard “all mountain” or whatever tyre choice was to start with two dhfs, when the back one wore out, move the front to the rear and buy a new one for the front.
(I may currently be doing this on my trail bike)

I did it roughly a third of the time on my old bike

Buy a pair, rear wears out first. Buy another pair, rear wears out first again. I now have two fronts. Use until they wear out.

Repeat.

It's fine.

These are 26" though. I'm still on my first pair of 29s on my new bike so haven't yet reached the stage of trying two fronts.

Not my choice when DHRII exists.

My Santa Cruz came fitted from factory with DHR of the front and on the rear. I've since changes to DHF front and DHR rear and to be honest I cant really tell the difference. But there must be a reason why one is manufactured as a front tyre and one is a rear tyre. So I'm happy to trust the manufacturer and go with that.

Also, what I'm happy to conclude from the above is that I don't think my tyre choice is the main limiting factor in my riding ability.

The R and F in the DH name may not be Front and Rear, there was a suggestion waaaaay back that it was Race and Freeride. That was the story anyway.

Maxxis themselves published catalogues amd promo material which confirmed it was front and rear

Ebike - (29" 3CT 2.6" EXO+) I run DHF front and DHR rear.

DH bike - (29" 2.5" DD) I run 3CG DHF front and 3CT DHF rear. I find it slides more pradicably and I don't need the forward traction on a DH bike as I never pedal hard.

I've been running one on the back for a while, as it's what I had when I punctured my previous tyre. No complaints, maybe I'm not fast enough any more to tell though 😂

2.5 is quite wide though, are you sure it will fit your frame?

I love the DHF EXO+ as a rear, I was riding it a lot this year and will put it back on when summer comes.

I've a part-worn 2.5 DHF on the back of my xc 29er at the moment. It's fine, it fits and I haven't died yet. I'm getting more use out of it and it's more than adequate for local rides and anything with a good surface; it copes with lumpy Sidlaw hills terrain too, despite not being an obvious choice for naggery rocks and slippery peat..

So long as you pair it with something stickier on the front, it'll be fine. Lots of people use less grippy rear tyres, like Aggressor or Dissector and seem to do fine; never tried those.
