I know this is a bit of a chestnut but I have broken yet another pump, a Lezyne .Anybody got a recommendation for a small, tough pump that will get decent pressure without too much effort?

I have a Fabric Millibar that I got very cheap off CRC, but it's so good I'd happily pay full price.

It suits me as it's short but girthy (fnarr fnarr), and fits in my small hip pack.

Everyone that uses my Topeak Race Rocket MT says how brilliant it is for it's size

The default recommendation used to be a Topeak xxxMorph, (xxx = morph of your preferred flavour, mini, mountain etc) but I'm afraid recently these have been eclipsed by the Lifeline Motion Floor Mount. These are bloody awesome, and really quite cheap. It's rucksack or frame-mount mini though, not jersey pocket mini, depends on how you want to carry it.

I see Lifeline’s marketing department have decided to **** with us. A 30cm pump is a frame pump. Fitting in a jersey pocket is the definition of a mini pump. I have no doubt in the capabilities of larger pumps but that is not a mini pump.

Road or mountain - pocket, frame or backpack?

For mountain I love my very pricey OneUp.  I made an inline mount, store stuff in the handle and can pop my EDC in there on the gravel bike.

For backpack I sometimes take a mountain morph if not carrying the OneUp.

For road I want something skinny for high pressure. Birzman mini apogee works well for me on the couple of tines I've needed it.

Small pumps are great until you need to use them.

In my experience if you are running tubeless and need to repair a tyre the you need a more capable pump.

For shorter rides I take a small lightweight pump knowing I can phone a friend to get rescued or get a taxi.

For longer rides the topeak morph guage.

OneUp.

I also have a Topeak Race Rocket MT - but that sits in the spares box unused.

Lezyne pumps are gash.

I use a Mountain Morph most of the time but I also have a Silca Tattico and would recommend that as well, it's closer to a jersey pocket size but still works well.  They now have the Gravelero thats meant to have a bit more volume which wouldn't be a bad thing but I haven't tried it so have no idea if it is any good.  Tattico looks nicer though 🙂

I'm a Oneup fan too. Only work on presta but they work very well.

Topeak mini morph here. Normally frame mounted, it’s doing the work of a track pump this week on a training camp. Lezyne aka valve strippers are awful.

For this who have one, are the Mini Morphs good in the real world?

On the back of this thread I ordered a Mountain Morph from Jeff’s evil emporium. I’m a bit taken aback at how large it is so have ordered the Mini and will return the Mountain of the mini is good (will give it a quick test at home)

Re Lezyne pumps, there are a few simple tricks to stop them extracting cores.
1 - ensure the core is tight to start with (even give it a little tighten before using the pump)
2 - if it’s for a pressure release button on the hose then use it. Otherwise unscrew the pump end from the hose first - this relieves the pressure that’s causing the friction between the hose and the valve core
3 - if you can’t do (2) for some reason then press the hose in towards the rim firmly when unscrewing. As above this removes the frictions and stops the unscrewing action.

(I’ve got a lezyne pump and love it on the road bike - same pump does co2 and pumps thanks to a clever hose design, but it’s a bit too low volume for a mountain bike)

Impressed so far with the Crankbrothers Klic HV Mini Floor Pump

Also like my Topeak Mountain Morph TT  - it always gets approving comments when I loan it out on the trail. I've had it for years.

My EDC 100 is deffo the best pump I've used in the field and can even reseat a tubeless tyre BUT its h.e.a.v.y and mine keeps opening when on downhill sections - I've had to tape it closed which is rubbish quite frankly for the amount it cost.

On my gravel bike I use a Topeak Racerocket and its pretty good - pumps up my 47x650b with about 100 - 150 strokes plus its quite light and crucially hasn't broken in about 5 years.

I also have a massive chunky Blackburn Mammoth 2fer for my Fatbike which also has a CO2 inside it. This too is bombproof and about 8 years old!

Every other brand of mini pump I've used has let me down.

This for me too. I don't think I care about the weight with it frame mounted and so effectively including my tools, and it works really well, but it does open occasionally and gets crap inside. I replaced the rubber seal thing that holds the handle down but that made no difference. I think tape is a good call. They should design a better means of keeping it shut.

Coincidentally I did strip and clean mine earlier today, which thankfully is a quick job requiring no tools, so I did it by the kitchen sink leaving no evidence of filthy bike bits in the house.

Before this I also had a Mountain Morph which was a really good pump and lasted for many many years, but its size doesn't suit what I carry any more. I don't think it's what you'd call a mini pump. Also at some point had a shiny Lezyne mini floor pump, used as per the Mountain Morph, and a similar size I guess, but simply not as good/reliable.

Re Lezyne pumps, there are a few simple tricks to stop them extracting cores.

Step 1/  Throw it away and buy a pump without an inherent flaw that needs workarounds to operate consistently 😉

That's what I did after it unscrewed  a core on Jacobs Ladder, in the dark and rain. Twice. Despite doing 1, 2 and a bit of 3 above!

My OneUp has never opened itself, 2 years old, strapped to a big enduro bike and questionable line choice.

As an edition to my last post, just looking at page 66 of STW issue 151 looks like there is a Lifeline (CRCWiggle) branded version of the Truflow also

Syncros Boundary 1.5HV here. Retractable hose, clamp on fitting (not screw), well sealed when not in use.

Just seen that Moon do pumps - the Aiolos looks good on paper will pump to 160psi  (£15 too). Anyone tried one?

On the OneUp pumps opening up, out on my hardtail the other night mine opened up on every run. Very irritating. Will tape. I think perhaps my replaced rubber seal there is a bad one? It's quite a shiny smooth material.

Mind you, it also doesn't do it much on my full suspension bike. Hardtail vibrations/knocks required.

May start a separate thread on this.
