I'm being joined on my little West Highland Way jolly next month by folk who will be riding the second half with me and starting at Tyndrum.

I'm just trying to work out some rough timings. Can anyone who has done this give me an idea of how long it took you. I will be doing the complete WHW so Conic Hill and the Loch Lomond carry section.

Cheers

I did this with a mate last year. I set off from Milngavie at 6am and he joined me at Tyndrum at 1pm for what is by far the better half of the route to Fort William. I did it a little different as I had done the top Loch Lomond section before and it is C**p so picked up the ferry at Rowardennan Lodge Youth Hostel about 9am to the other side and took the bike track/road on the West side of the Loch to Beinglas Farm Campsite where I rejoined the WHW. We arrived in Fort William about 10.30pm after taking our time and enjoying the ride/views without busting a gut! I know people say that this is not "the full way" but believe me the top section is not worth the hassle, if you want to experience it though go for it and factor in an extra hour or so to get through the section. Good luck!

AlasdairMc might be along in a mo. He left Milngavie at midnight and had lunch at Tyndrum.

Marty - that's 14 hours and sounds like a pretty decent time for not busting a gut. I'm doing this as a charity ride - suffering is a part of the selling point.

My start time is going to be 2am. It's a very important point to factor in whether I can get a fish supper at the Real Food Cafe as a breakfast

Rode the WHW a couple of years ago, starting in Fort William. Stayed overnight in Tyndrum and set off at about 9:00am the following morning. Including stopping for food, taking photos etc. it took about 10 hours to get to Milngavie.

Food is always a factor especially a good chippy!! I never really thought of the time for the second half- it just passed by very quickly. I had a deadline for the first section to catch the ferry and meet my mate. I was taken on a bit of a detour as well at conic hill and missed the top as they are doing repairs on several of the the footpaths so might be worth checking to see if there are any diversions in place which I got unexpectedly hit with! Throws you off a bit if you have a deadline. Hope it goes well! Oh an if your are returning by train book your bikes on it before - otherwise they can by a bit of pain about it going on.

What tyres are you using? (Seriously). 🙂

I am doing it in September, Milngavie to Ft Bill. I think my usual ST Minion front / High Roller rear combo will be too draggy for the WHW. I am happy to scarifice some grip for improved rollability.

We are stopping overnught at Tyndrum too. Whilst the thought of the Real Food Cafe will keep me going, not so sure that a fish shupper will be the best carbo cruncher for the next day!
