My local forest is plagued with them. No matter what you talk about they elude to their gear deficiency.

Anyone got a good response?

They normally add "yep, mud tyres in summer", "look i wear plimsoles or "I was 50 yesterday can you believe it"

Militent? elude?

Distract them from gears by appealing to their inner pedant?

I don't talk to anyone who doesn't have exactly 11 gears. I suggest you do the same.

They'll have the last laugh when they fly past you on the climbs. I'm loving the SS in the mud. Back to gears when it drys up though.

I've got 10 on one and one on the other, does that count?

Right up there with people who correct your spelling on a internet forum.

Yes you are quicker up the fire road, your bike weighs a third less.

Point out that statistically if a single gear has a certain risk of failure then that risk can be mitigated by spreading the work over more gears 10 gears =1/10 the risk see....this is why singlespeed bikes are always the ones upside down mid ride despite their outward appearance of mechanical simplicity.

[too easy]

I'd just be glad that you're communicating in the spoken word rather than in writing if I were you.......

🙄

Hardly being militent (sic) though, are they - boring, maybe, but militant?
I had visions of them manning a picket line and abusing you geared riders with shouts of "scab! scab!

You're not talking about Friston Forest are you? Dam place is crawling with militant singlespeeders... taking all the KOMs on the climbs.

Tables are turned on the descents though 🙂

The exact opposite for me, makes very hard work locally when all your effort is wasted from spinning in mud.

Other than Jedi teaching me how much grip is available from my tyres whilst cornering, the biggest revelation I've ever had in cycling was realising I could do it all in one gear.
I defy anyone not to be hooked after passing a geared up sucker on a climb.
Gears are great. SS is more addictive.
More proud than militant.

Yes of course being in the wrong gear is quicker up hills, that's why the TdF is dominated by singlespeed bikes, well done for proving the ops point 😆

Just to balance it out I'm a very mild mannered and pacifist singlespeeder 🙂

MSP - I think you missed my point - I'm not in the TDF, and I doubt you are - heck I'm not even usually on a road bike - but I am out on local hills and trails, passing geared bikes, uphill. It's fun. You should try it.

(did you notice that I also showed love for geared bikes on my post?)

Are they riding rigids or wasting efficiency with suspension?

Passing geared bikes up hills, aaw, how cute. I suspect the only reason you pass them is because your bike has one gear, right? Rather than your do-or-die self appreciating attitude of holiness, the way you see them ahead and turn those cranks like your life depends on it, "yes mummy, I will show the other boys that I'm cool too, thanks for the lycra shorts mummy, I can grow a beard you know". Meanwhile the chaps on the geared bikes, people with friends who they actually enjoy hanging out with, happily let you past as obviously you must be going for a strava record or some sh#t like that. When the finish they go home, do a quick bike wash and change and spend the evening enjoying the company of their family. Not as fulfilling as spending the whole evening naked in the bath with your singlespeed listening to the neighbours tv through the wall, im sure. 😉

Wow! What a d*ck. Just be grateful we are healthy enough to be able ride bikes. Whatever bikes they are.

my tip is to invest in the company that makes replacement knee joints.. ther going to be selling well in the future. Maybe they could make some enduro ones.

Seems like it's more "geared" folks mind set toward SSers that's militant - personally I couldn't care less what others ride.. It's just a bicycle ..

I ride both geared and single speed bicycles and can often be found arguing with myself.

My efforts to derail this thread have failed.

I'm going to play with my singlespeed mates instead, they're much nicher and don't suck their chains.

@wwaswas, it's pointless trying to tell them - if they didn't listen to their teacher, they're not going to listen to you.
