Having seen the topic about this bike and with winter coming, I've been debating getting a turbo trainer for the garage. I don't ride road, have two full sussers that get used four/ five times a week when it's not absolutely chucking it down. Is this setup realistic for those days in winter when waterproofs won't help and will I feel any benefit of doing some sessions rather than just skipping rides etc.

Have looked at some training programmes and just don't want to jump straight in. Have got a mind to take part in some team enduro's next spring and feel comfortable in my fitness cardio wise now but want to maintain and supplement that.

Also a newborn means time out might prove an issue in the short term. Thanks in advance, have used the search but wanted a specific answer from peoples experiences.

If it's just for use on a turbo, get something even cheaper s/h - a BSO from the local paper should work fine.

(says the man with a bike which cost £1500 consigned to permanent turbo duties)

I've considered that, just saw that the merlin bike was fairly cheap for a new product. Would the turbo be worth the effort as a training tool when riding isn't an option?

I'd investigate a spin bike. Turbos feel quite dead and I wonder of something with more inertia would feel better

Yes the turbo is worthwhile, no it isn't worth £400 all in. I'd buy a very very cheap bike to put on the turbo if I never planned on road riding. Alternatively, on one of those bright, crisp winter's morning, when the baby is asleep, you might just fancy an hour out on the road. In that case, the Merlin is a great buy.

(Says the man who's retro £450 Time Trial bike is permanently fastened to the turbo)

A spin bike is a good option and a nicer feel. I ride my fixed wheel road bike on the turbo sometimes and the coupling and leg inertia is a much better workout.

I have considered a spin bike but we've got one in work and I can't get on with it. As Youve said at least if I do get a road bike I can take it out if I ever feel the dark urges. Thanks for the input.
