Any recommendations - there's only two of us and we're after a cheap room in a chalet / b&b / hotel.

Take a tent and camp in the field next to the DMC lift station for free? Take a bottle of Muc-Off "Dry Shower" to keep the BO at bay and use the portaloos? I've stayed there in a camper van before. Its passable for a few days!
Can't remember where we stayed, but it was a chalet in AdH near a little arcade of shops. There are also obviously other options too in Bourg d'Oisans (probably a bit inconvenient for travel up to AdH and the ski lifts though),Oz etc etc
