Mega wide steel mudguards?

Looking for some wide stainless steel (or polished aluminium? Just want shiny 😁) mudguards for a commuter build. Like these:

mudguard

Velo Orange 700c x 63mm Fluted Mudguards

...but wider if possible. Would like to run 29x2.35 at least. 27.5 would be acceptable if necessary, but that's kinda by the by in terms of width of the actual guard.

Anyone know of any?

I went for the pictured Velo Orange 63s, couldn't find anything anywhere near reasonably priced and of the same quality. They say max 2.2"/55mm tyres and IME they mean it.

@ton dear lord 😯 I thought £70 was bad enough.

@bikesandboots that's interesting, though not what I wanted to hear... As in you'd get contact on wider tyres? I was going to get the guards and fit them, and eyeball the clearance with 700c wheels. I need to rebuild at least one wheel anyway (dynohub currently on a 26" rim) so could rebuild onto 27.5" rims) but worried that it'll look stupid with tyres wider than (well, as wide as) the guards, even if they'll fit inside.

I'm thinking that spray won't really be a problem though since it'll be fairly rounded, if wide, semi slicks, not a big mud tyre with side knobs.

Admittedly my frame doesn't help (chainstay yoke hole position, and seat tube in the way), but they're very close (5mm?) to the shoulder knobs of my 2.2/55mm Race Kings (XC shallow knobbed tyre), I doubt the 2.3/58mm would fit. Or you might get 1-2mm of spray escaping either side. You could always mount them further away I suppose. The front drive side of the rear one is narrower still to accommodate a front mech and big chainring, I bent mine out.

The guards can be re-radiused ( https://velo-orange.blogspot.com/2017/01/re-radiusing-fenders.html) by widening them, so 27.5" might work out for you.

I've been looking for the same thing for my Stooge. You can get PDW 650 Beast guards which are pretty wide, but I've not found anything that matches the coverage of the Honjos. Not that I can justify the cost though.

Cheers. Interesting article about re-radiusing, I'd wondered about gently widening them a bit, but hadn't thought it would affect the radius (also would have assumed it would increase the radius but there you go). There's a comment from VO to the effect that the difference in width won't be massive though. Also, I imagine the fluted ones would be particularly hard to bend.

I came across these Giles Berthoud stainless ones again: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/mudguards/700-x-40-gilles-berthoud-700c-stainless-steel-mudguards-long/ Slightly narrower but I wonder if they have more scope for bending. Not sure I want to pay £60 to find out, and they also don't come with a bracket for the brake bridge (which is an extra tenner... Why?) and it's not clear how many stays you get - they recommend an extra set @ £26 🙄

Saw the PDW ones. The narrower ones are quite reasonably priced, and can't be much different - they've obviously worked out they can more or less charge what they like for the wide ones the options are so limited. Only in black anyway, so not for me.

I have the honjo 80mm on the tandem.
They fit over 2.5 gravel tyres and are currently over 2.35 nobby nick.
They have handled some serious abuse and remain solid.
Looking battered, scraped and dented but look better for it and still perform well.
£££ though!

Wondering whether to just give up on 29/27.5 and make my life easier (and cheaper) by going 26" 😕

These 80mm Wald ones look decent enough:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185429943310

Found these 700c 68mm alloy ones, but not hopeful of them getting more stock (have enquired anyway)

Just in case it's useful to anyone looking for something similar... I plumped for the Wald ones in the end. Figured the alternatives were starve for a couple of months and buy the Honjo ones, or pay too much money (and wait too long) for the not-quite-wide-enough VOs.

So best case, I can reshape them to fit 29er tyres, worst case I have to go 26er, but either way I save a packet.

Turns out they're pretty big. Didn't quite fit over a 29x2" tyre out of the box, but the first gentle pass bending as per the VO blog linked above (thanks again) and they fit fine.

20230105-191159

Dry fitted them to the frame and they actually seem a bit big. The stays seem too long even fitting for a 29er! They're also heavy, ugly, and have holes that are way too big, so I might replace them with something like
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/384368066780.

29x2.2" is the biggest tyre I currently have on a rear QR wheel - bit close with the knobs, but a less knobbly, more rounded profile should be ok.

20230105-190649

20230105-190734

Then realised that one of the advantages of horizontal dropouts is that you can make more room, so long as you can still get the chain tension (though also that removing the rear wheel is a pain with full guards).

20230105-185931

Pretty happy with how this has worked out.

Not stainless bit this was my find a few years back for wide rattle free mudguards.

Accidently replied in the original post so that's back on the main page now!

I have a set of Pletscher R80s sat in the shed (kept them when I sold my Jones) if you could get the black off they would polish up I think (they are extruded aluminium).

on current bike using SKS Bluemels 75 super stable and rattle free and lots of clearance over 29x2.6 Bontrager XR2

I'm still deciding what full guards to get for the MTB so it's always good to see what works for some. Shame those Wald ones seem to lack adjustability, and the key thing is that they don't have the stays running on the outside, like the VOs. I have VO guards on the gravel bike and they're fantastic, well worth the cost for how long they will last and how well they work. Good to know the SKS 75s are quiet, i've tried a pair of the edge AL ones on the gravel bike and they weren't great, partly due to the square profile and the limited adjustment of the stays.

Kinda hoping the VO 68mm guards will work with 2.4s if they are set a bit high (and I have the room).

I bought and fitted berthoud stainless guards to the pinklespeed for winter. I wasn’t overly impressed given the cost and I wouldn’t rush to buy the same again.
https://flic.kr/p/2nZgDbY
The front stays have since been moved inboard after I fitted a new rack.
https://flic.kr/p/2o9o3EH

For those wondering why I’ve not trimmed the stays, I’m waiting on a new longer and wider fork, so leaving them until
I can trim to suit. First mounting i used an expanding headset nut inside the bottom of the steerer.

I have the Honjo 62mm rounded guards which have been rock solid. I think the rounded profile probably provides quite a bit of rigidity. However, execuing the purchase, and then subsequently drilling into the purchase (repeatedly) did cause a large amount of consternation. Still, it's over now and they have performed flawlessly.

Only thing I would change is the colour. The polished finish can really catch that low winter sun and you do end up with an annoying dazzle at certain angles (only a problem on about 3 days of the year, but still).

Blumels 75 over 29x2.6 Bonty XR2.

couple of pics, back on train after overnight off-road Surrey to Portsmouth ride and just after building up. Ride to Portsmouth was filthy, but i stayed very clean

 Bike on Train

quieter than the Pletschers as they were noisy if gravel/etc was hitting them. The Bluemels are quiet and rattle free. Front needs a little trim as it can catch on steps and drops but the flap is very flexible.

Just to add to the discussion - for those of you with a bigger budget - as I couldn't see these mentioned...

Look nice, but a bit too spendy, for me

@rootes1 that looks tidy. What’s the frame; looks like a nice evolution of a mixte design?

@belugabob carbon are ok but can be really noisy with gravel and pings.
https://flic.kr/p/2nVwW3z

A friend made me those as a prototype but they didn’t get any further. Apologies for the poor pic

Ditto, that looks very tidy rootes1, what is it? Good to see bluemel 75s working well, it's probably what I'll opt for so I can use wider tyres

The Bluemels 75 above look to be doing a good job with the 2.6" (66mm) tyres. I see in the spec that the 75 refers to the maximum tyre width (3") rather than the mudguard's width.

My 55mm tyres are the max for my Velo Orange 63s, and there's a strip of mud all around the outside and splashes up the sides of the guard where the odd blob has escaped.

Kinda hoping the VO 68mm guards will work with 2.4s if they are set a bit high (and I have the room).

@fastus Presume you mean the 63s as they don't do wider unfortunately. See my above sentence for how it might work out.

I don't see anyone running a front mud flap. My guard is 7.5" above the ground, quite a bit of mud on the bottom fifth of the downtube. I see the Bluemels there has the standard extension piece taking it seemingly a bit lower than mine. How far off the ground is it there @rootes1 ?

Hi @bikesandboots,

flaps:

the Bluemels 75s have long moulded flaps front and rear - you can see here - will measure. It is a little low as the flap does catch on things sometimes.

bike

I have a 3" tyre to try for the front, might be a little tight width wise.

When i was using the Pletshers on a Jones (R80 over 29x2.8 Vee Speedsters), a flap would have been ideal (apart from DIY, Brompton front flaps are good to use), you can see the dirt line on the downtube, which also meant dirty feet and cranks:

Drawing a line from the tyre contact patch past the bottom edge of the mudguards, it does look like your Bluemels need to be that low to cover the BB. Doing the same on mine, seems another 2.5" taking them down to 5" off the ground would cover the BB.

The VO flaps are around 16.5cm long designed to be hug to the tarmac, so something DIY would probably be better for me.

Mistyped the mention, try again - @faustus

Yeah, mis-type from me. I've gone for the Bluemel 75 longs for now and will see how they go. Got them fairly cheaply on bike24 as they ship to UK again now, will see how much of a faff it is to receive stuff from the EU!

@faustus

these ones ? SKS Bluemels 75 U Long Mud Guard Set - black matt | BIKE24

75U Long

if so looks like you got the last set!

The ones I fitted are:

SKS Bluemels Style 28 75 Set Black (sjscycles.co.uk)

75 Style

I thing SKS has replaced the 75 U / 75U Long with the new 75 Style version.#

as far as i can tell the profile is the same, just the length and flaps on the Style

Yes, it does look like I got the last one. The style version looks better with the longer flap and double stays on the front. I'll see how it works for me anyway. I'd guess I could get the flaps separately if I needed to and they'd likely fit if the profile is the same. I'm not too worried about total coverage though anyway.

Well, 75 U long mudguards fitted and they feel pretty solid so far and fairly straightforward to fit. Just need some riding in various terrain to see how they do. Fit well over 2.6 tyres so pretty happy with clearance.

Agreed!
Meanwhile, I bought some of those universal stays I linked for my Wales, having failed to think of a better option, other than bending my own stays from stainless wire, but this build is out of hand as it is. They look like they'll work well. Slightly annoying to introduce a bit of black plastic, but they don't look bad.

The frame's still waiting for me to clear coat it. Will post pics when I'm done.

DIY flap out of damp proof course. Down to 10cm off the ground. Not sure how it'll hold up with the wind and spray against it, might have to yet buy a heavy flap and cut it down to length.

How did that work out? I found I had to secure the rear to the seatstay bridge to stop it bouncing about. Punched two small holes and used a zip tie as an intended temporary fix which I'm still happy with 18 months later.

SKS Bluemels Style 28 75 Set Black

I have those ones fitted too, or the rear rather as its a suss fork and i need to find some sort of clamp to go round the fork lowers.
Beware those extension bits, they can fall off as mine did. Though thankfully I heard it go and managed to pick it up.
Fitted to a 29er suss. Had to move the mounting point because if you use the end one on a suss, the action of the suspension will deform and snap the mount.
