You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
I’ve just had an email stating Mayhem is cancelled this summer due to Corona Virus, refunds to be issued forthwith. I know some love the event and some don’t but I’m gutted...
It appears that I haven’t seen the news page either.... sorry all.
Understandable for the organisers.... a lot of money at risk.
Shame, as come rain or shine, Mountain Mayhem has always been a highlight of my riding year
There is a little bit of me that thinks the institutions of the country are overreacting a bit though.
I completely agree, a risk certainly. I can’t help but feel you’re in a pickle either way. You don’t cancel and it’s the apocalypse and if you do it’s overreacting.
Wonder how many other events get cancelled. Hopefully not the Dyfi.
So does this mean essentially every major participation and spectator sporting event will be cancelled as the insurance companies are backing out?
Unless they already have insurance I guess!
That appears to be a very odd decision given how health officials think the virus will spread / not spread
Original headline on the front page said that the event was looking for a new title sponsor. Maybe the virus is a convenient excuse, or the straw that broke the camel's back.
If the event is cancelled due to government instructions, they will lose a lot of money on stuff they will have had to pay for up front. They are unlikly to get insurance to cover that, so this seems a realistic and prudent response.
None of us will be booking a cycling holiday in the Italian Alps right now, this is no different.
Isle of Man TT, leMans etc will 100% get cancelled I think.
and probably the entire formula 1 season, or the races will happen with no spectators.
I suspect (hope not) that this might be the start of a snowball effect, people cancelling stuff left right and centre. I really hope not though!

I'd say it's the opposite for those that already have their insurance in place.
Where I work is reliant on people coming to places to do stuff so we're looking with some concern at things. If the government instructs everyone to stay home and public venues etc are closed, our business interruption insurance kicks in and we're okay. If that doesn't happen, but we suffer a big drop in the number people walking through the door because of general fear, we have more of a (financial) problem.
I think it will be the one-off events buying spot insurance specifically that will be stuffed by this as they won't be able to get cover. Continuing events, such as ongoing sports seasons, will have cover already in place so are relatively safe for now, until their next renewal at least. So events like the TT might be more exposed than Formula 1.
Looks like a convenient excuse to cancel to me

That was the original story first thing this mornin, but after today's mid-morning Government announcement, the organisers checked with their insurers and found that they couldn't get event cancellation insurance, so it was indeed the final straw by the sound of things.

Why not? Check the Foreign Office advice the no go zone is 10 Lombardy villages and one in part of the Veneto many miles from the alps. (Unless you're American where the State Department have said no travel to Italy unless essential.
So it’s cancelled. What is there to do instead? Something of similar demands, doesn’t even need to be organised event, just a weekend at hard work.

Not sure about the TT, the IOM doesn't seem to have much time for 'elf and safety gone mad.
My only event this year is Passportes, frankly if they cancel, unless there is a specific outbreak in the area, I'll still go.

Difference between giving motorcyclists the choice to race, and protecting the elderly and the vulnerable.
The mortality rate among young healthy people is low, but that doesn't mean those demographics should put others at risk by spreading it.
The problem is that the Gov't has declared it a notifiable outbreak. That means that if something goes wrong, for example the organiser had to cancel because they couldn't get enough staff, then the insurance company is now on the hook. So if your event isn't yet insured, you're going to struggle to get it insured for the forseeable. Given that last year we lost 2 major events to the weather, let alone bloody foreigners coming over ere with their viruses its no wonder they cancelled. Would you want to be on the hook for 100s of refunds if it gets rained out?
Better shut down the underground then

I renewed Southern Enduro's event insurance yesterday (Including cancellation policy).
Possibly worth looking at the small print SF
