Anyone used the Maxxis WT tyres on 30mm rims?
Their website refers to some 'WT' models as optimised for 35mm rims, but it also says optimum for 30-35mm rims against other models with the 'WT' moniker.
Anyone used them?
There's a few deals around on WT tyres, hence asking the question...
(Looking for a 2.5 tyre to go on 30mm rims for my hard tail).
Cheers All!
I have 2.5wt minion dhf and aggressor on Ex511 30mm rims.
Not dead yet and the profile looks good.
Nope, unit recently I had a DHF on Arch MK3 and it was fine. In fact, the Mrs has a DHR2 on a 24mm wide rim and that's fine as well.
Smashing. That'll do for me.
Cheers.
2.5 Shorty wt on 27mm internal, no problems as such but I have a 2.3 Shorty on another bike, also 27mm internal and I must admit it seems to have better grip in muddy conditions, the 2.5 is 29 while the 2.3 is 27.5. I have a 2.5 Maxxgrip dhf to go on the 29er when I get around to it and had no intention of going with a 2.3 for summer riding
I’ve used 2.5 and 2.4 (both WT) on 30mm and like them so much I’m using them for the next bike.
Maxxis tires are famously narrower that they claim so you'll be fine on 30mm inner rims.
Minion DHR2 27.5 X 2.60WT ETRTO = 66-584
Claimed width 66mm or 2.6 inches
Actual Width on a 35mm inner rim = 63mm or 2.49 inches
2.5 WT DHF and DHR2 on my ex1501 30mm internal wheels. spot on and wouldn't go back to 2.3
I thought they'd sorted the sizing out, my 2.4s are massive compared to old 2.35s
Anyway I run 2.4 DHR2s front and rear on 25mm rims and it's perfectly fine
A mixture of 2.5 and 2.3 WT's here all run on 30 mm rims, they're bob on.
Only thing I run a 35 mm rim for is the big old 2.8" Rekon on the back of the E-bike.
I have a DHR WT 2.4 on the back with a 2.35 Magic Mary on the front on DT Swiss xm 1501 which are 30mm, the Magic Mary is still the bigger tyre by 4mm. The profile on both tyres is spot on as that's the size rim WT tyres were made for.
Will you die? No.
Will you die? Yes, death inevitably follows like. However, it's very unlikely that your eventually passing would be in anyway related to the width of your rim.
30-35mm is the ideal width of Thier all mountain/enduro WT type tyres like shorty, dhf, dhr2, hr2, aggressor etc.
They have just released a couple of more cc tyres in WT. The Aspen and recon I think. On these, the max rim width is 30mm
Therefore, to my mind, 30mm is the best rim width to take advantage of the fill range of WT tyres from Maxxis.
I do wish tyre manufacturers would indicate the intended rim with for each tyre though.

Just for the record my 2.5 & 2.4 WT tyres measure spot on with 35mm ID rims.
Here are some measurements from the tires on my bikes.
I measured at the widest part of the carcass using digital callipers. As you can see, I'm a Maxxis fan :-). The width doesn’t really matter unless you’re replacing another brand of tire and want the same width and volume. They are all still ace tires.
My Maxxis tires
HR 2.4 = 56mm (2.2 inches) on a DT Swiss 1900 (25mm inner)
