I am considering purchasing the Maxxis Rekon 27.5 x 2.4 WT has a front / rear tire please advise if you know of any reviews on the tire or have used the tire and can comment on its performance?

I've had one on the rear in that size. Not a great deal to say about it. Seemed okay. Faster rolling than a DHR II WT (duuurh - of course) and an Aggressor 2.5 WT.

Grip seemed okay, but wasn't using it on anything particularly challenging (dusty dry South Downs Way). Definitely not as much braking traction compared to the Aggressor when trying to slow down.

I'm running an Ardent Race out back at the moment and not noticed much difference. That was surprisingly grippy up a steep, slippy climb.

Am tempted to try it on the front (DHF at the moment) with the Ardent Race on the rear if the gash on my knee ever heals up and I get out on the bike again to do anything involving some distance.

Rich, I hope you recover from your injury and can start riding again, I am currently riding a steel HT (Chromag Wideangle) with a Maxxis HR2 2.4 WT on the rear which I find a little draggy on day long rides and was considering swopping it for the Recon.

I had considered the Ardent Race, but I have seen a comment saying that the Recon cleans mud well I ride in West Yorkshire where the conditions are generally muddy.

I appreciate your comments about the ardent race and the traction it provides when climbing I may consider this tire has an option

I have a DHR2 2.4 WT on the front which is fantastic both for braking and directional control

Thank you for your response to my question
Cheers
Andrew

Have used the 2.8 version for a couple of years now. Very good all year round rear. Grips well in anything other than deep mud and clears quickly. Good on front in most conditions but prefer a dhr2 for braking in winter. Back on front again for summer.
Consider it a step up grip wise from an Ardent.

Clubby,
Thank you for your comments particularly in relation to the Ardent. I did use a Ardent many years ago on a 26 inch steel HT but was not impressed with it's Trackton when it was on wet roots / rocks

Thanks Andrew - much appreciated (had a cr*ppy day with dressings and swabs!).

I didn't notice the Rekon being much knobbier than the Ardent Race - to be honest, I don't think there's a great deal between the two, both seem good as fast (ish) rolling, grippy trail tyres. Rekon looks like might have better side knobs for cornering of the two.

What compound are you going for? Mine's dual on the Rekon, and 3C on the AR (Max Speed).

Rich I am planning on buying the Rekon 3C has I hope it will assist with traction on the wet roots I ride in the local woods, the group I ride with only undertake short road climber where I think a dual compound would be batter than a 3C!

Nice - I've not seen many stockist of them (I actually picked mine up SH from someone on here).

I know Jeff from Worldwide Cyclery rates them and has DHRII on the front and Rekons on the rear of his Yeti 4.5. Slightly different climate though! 😉

Rekon is not really that grippy as most center knobs are ramped but it corners nicely. For any loose stuff on climbs you’d power through the Ardent is grippier.

I’ve got a 2.6 WT Rekon on the rear - it’s ok in the dry and fast rolling but mud made it slide out a lot. Initially fun until you lose grip entirely....

Not a tyre I’d pick for mud at all, personally
