I have just bought a Maxxis Ardent 27.5 from Chain Reaction. The it arrived I was a little taken aback as it seemed to have so little tread on it. So I ignored it for two weeks , hoping some would grow.
Tonight I was about to swap the tyres so I got the old callipers out to convince myself i was wrong. Current High Roller that feel bald when riding it has 1.6 mm central back height.
New Ardent is 1.4 mm !!

Is this normal? or are there fake Ardents about?

It’s a faster rolling dry conditions tyre so it has shallow tread. The 2.4 Ardent has bigger knobs than the 2.25

Ardent, or ardent race? I have some 2.4 Ardents and there's more than 1.4mm and I've used them. Actually, carcass plus tread on the ardent is closer to the seat tube than the dhr2 wt 2.4.

Edit; just measured them. About 3.5mm at the crown.

It is not an Ardent Race ... but it is a 2.25 - so maybe that answers my question. It's for a Production Privee and 2.3 is the most it can run.

I wasn't planning on it being as lightly treaded as it is. Fine for now but will be uselss one it rains.
I assume CRC won't take it back as I have thrown the original red plastic thing it comes folded in...?

My Highball takes a max 2.3 so have used these. It's mostly dry and dusty where I ride, but they're a pretty good fast rolling option for mixed use I find.

They are fast, low tread tyres. Better than you'd think in the wet, though- they shed mud instantly so they'll usually find some grip. Bugger all use for pedalling through swamps though

If you are not racing just use what you have on for Gods sake.
Learn to peddle in the mud, compensate.
Just run what you have on!
For the 99% of people it will work.
Go tubeless, never go back.
Everybody compensating that they didn’t have the right tyres on, for ducks sake.
Get on your bike and just ride

☝️Bit aggressive, dude only wants to change his tyres! I'm a big advocate of "stop obsessing about kit and just get out and ride", but in this case, the OP is replacing a bald tyre, which seems reasonable to me.

Anyway, I have a 29"x2.25 Ardent, approx 1000 miles old, and it measures at just over 3mm.

On the subject of Ardent, it's my favourite rear tyre; fast enough yet grippy enough.

I have just measured my 2.4 and 2.25 in 26 on the bike, both 3mm on central blocks with tape measure. The older 2.25 in 650b measures 1.5 not on bike. Based on this I think you might have an older 2.25 which has less tred depth. There are no markings to show this on the side walls.

Edit. The 650b has only been used on the front, the 2.4 26inch also on front for approx 2 years and the 2.25 26inch for about 8 months on rear

Not obsessing about anything - I just don’t want to replace my baldish tyre with a new one with less tread. Sounds like a fair concept to me...

I do laugh whenever someone asks a question about bikes on here and someone else pops up to shout "learn to ride better" you could apply this response to pretty much every question ever asked.

No one, who isn’t racing, should ever upgrade or even change their bike. Gotcha.

As said above OP, there’s a bit of variation between 2.4 and 2.25 ardents, my 2.4s are much more aggressive than my older 2.25s, I’d thought both sizes of the new ones were the same but doesn’t look like there is a way to tell, especially if buying unseen/online where stock may have been sat in a warehouse for ages

It does feel weird but the tyre that's designed for low tread should work better than the one that's just worn out. Especially because tyres age in various ways not just tread.

Great all round tyre - lived all winter on my "mud bike" - perfectly fine if you aren't slashing loamy berms for your youtube channel

now are doing dry weather BW and road mixed surface lock down rides - still great, although my lighter girlfriend on little wheels with XC tyres can roll faster than me on tarmac descents.

Think I used one (still just EXO) as a rear in the alps prior to the invention of the aggressor.

They embody "Jack of all trades master of none" so much that if schwable made them they'd be called the Jiggly Jack.

Being German, they'd be more likely to call a decent all-rounder that was a "Jack of all trades" something crazy like, er, "Hans Dampf"...

Had Hans Dampf on the 29er ... now the combo of an On One Chunky Monkey on the front and a High Roller on the back ...
But that is also about to be changed
