thinking about trying tubeless out. From what I understand I could lose the dual ply tyres, save some weight and not suffer from pinch flats. If I used a maxxis lust version, does that mean I dont need to use sealant also?
You'll still need sealant to seal up little holes and tears, which is one of the biggest advantages of tubeless. LUST tyres should seal and inflate tubeless more easily than regular ones, though normal maxxis tend to work quite well tubeless anyway.
LUST/UST tyres are a fair bit heavier than regular single ply. Won't gain much from losing the dual ply probably.
They can be inflated without sealant, but really you want sealant to deal with all the thorn type punctures.
Normal Maxxis tyres as said work well tubeless anyway, just so long as you use sealant. Don't even need Tubeless Ready tyres with Maxxis. It's mainly just a certification to say they are TR but they pretty much were anyway.
Would suggest EXO Maxxis tyres if you're doing flinty downhills to reduce the chance of slicing through the sidewall.
If you're doing plain DH though, you might want to stick with dual ply and just run them tubeless.
