Looking for a change from Nobby Nics on my 5 Spot. The Nics 2.25 TL Snakeskin, feel hard & not that supple, & come up a bit small but I don't want a draggy tyre either.
So do any ADvantage users rate them?
I had Nobby Nics on the Blur and didn't rate them at all. Fitted ADvantages (albeit the 2.1s) and the grip is transformed.
Big fan of the Advantage. Big volume and supple. Rolls well and use it all year round.
I'd call them adequate more than good. I run one on the back, used to have one on the front too - crap idea, nowhere near aggressive enough tread pattern for my liking
Using advantage 2.1 and they really suit my riding. A good balance between grip and rolling speed, I'd give them a go!
Got one on the back. It used to be on the front but it scared the shit out of me. Rolls nicely on the back though!!
+1 good as a back tyre. I match it wth a Minion DHF on the front.
Advantage 2.4 here for rocky days out...that and it was £5 hardly used.
Really supple, grippy and good. Chuffing HUUUGE!
My rims are not wide enough to support it properly though...
I use them (in 2.4 mahoosive size) as summer tyres, as it's rare the trails round here ever dry out enough to warrant proper summer tyres.
They're quite square profiled, the edge tread behaves differently to the centre and the transition between the two is noticeable, to me anyway. So they corner a little wierd. I never feel like I can entirely trust them.
Wouldn't recommend them as a winter tyre unless you ride mainly surfaced, well draining trail centre stuff. That said, I do have them in the balloon size, so I shouldn't be too surprised that they're not great in the claggy stuff.
I'm not the sort to go hunting for bicycle component perfection so they'll do until I wear them out, but I'm not overly keen really.
I went the other way.. Advantage to Nobby Nics. I've got a 5spot as well!
Much prefer the NN to be honest. I found the side walls of the Advantage went through really quickly. The 2.25 are Big.. the 2.4 are ENORMOUS
I also have a 5 spot. Tried all sorts of tyres, just swapped from 2.4 Nobby Nics to Ust Conti rubber queens. Best tyre I have ever used. Must admit to a bit of a tyre fetish - searching for the holy grail. Can't recommend them enough. A riding buddy rode my bike and another fitted with Hans Damph at the weekend and said the Conti's were better.
I bought one, ran it on the back, narrow treads felt too squirmy on hardpack. Also had trouble fitting it into the bike as it is such a tall tyre. Ran it on the front and loved it, really big and grippy.
Thanks for the replies.
The Rubber Queen also sounds a rated tyre with good reviews but having used X-Kings RaceSport I found that the side walls are porous as I run tubeless with sealant (still trying to get one to seal after a couple of months) & cut a side wall first time in rocky ground – will go protection version next as I really like the tyre, but I don’t believe a protection version is available in Rubber Queen.
The tyres will be run tubeless on 19mm Crossmax rims – will the 2.25 Advantage be OK size wise on the rim as I’ve heard they come up large?
Purgatories do a very similar job, but much cheaper.
The same bloke designed both, but the Purg is his MK 2 version!
Big fan of Advantages they're my favourite tyre for Cannock's snooker-ball pebbles and jelly mud. Works well with a CrossMark on the back.
Sizing is fine imo not too big not too small.
I run the 2.1 advantage on an inbred 456. They do size up big - the 2.1 is pretty much a similar size to the 2.25 NN's I also run. I was running the NN on the 456 but got rid and put them on the SS to wear out - as they lack grip, are massively pressure critical and don't feel that nice.
I use a 70 on the back and a 62a on the front - brilliant grip, good wear and feel nice. Used in dark peaks rocks and never had an issue with sidewalls.
Run as a rear i think the ADvantage is a pretty good tyre, faster rolling than others with enough grip for most stuff and a nice feel when it starts to slide.
Wouldn't bother with one on the front though.
Hi Dickie, also tried X-King racesport. Nightmare to run tubeless so much so that i nearly sacked Conti tyres. The Ust/ tubeless Rubber Queen is a much stronger tyre, weighing in @ 762g on my scales for the 2.2 version (the 2.4 is too heavy for me). It has the protection sidewalls, rolls at least as fast as Nobby Nics but the grip is MUCH better.Went up a breeze tubeless on my Stans Crest wheelset. As i said before it's the best iv'e tried.
Big advantage fan here - a massively underrated tyre. Most folks in my riding group seem to have gravitated to them for a year round tyre over the last couple of years. 2.25 or 2.4 - both great. I'm currently running a 2.4 up front and a crossmark on the rear and it's running fine in even the really muddy crap that's out there at the moment.
Using 2.25 60a Exo ones at the moment, rate them 3/5 in damp weather. And thats on front and rear.
In dry weather they work well.
I try to use a 2.4 HR2 (again 60a compound and exo) with the Advantage tyre on the rear in wet weather.
I've used a 2.25 one as a rear tyre paired with a High roller on the front, great combo in my opinion for the drier months and for trail centres where it doesn't get too boggy. I swapped it out this "summer" for a NN which i found much better in the mud.
Downhilldave - thanks for the feedback, but I think a full UST tyre is a bit heavy for what I'm after, & I'm going to stick with X-King when I build a 29er in the spring but will go with the ProTection version.
I saw it mentioned on another review the RQ's can be a bit draggy - true?
On the back they're great, less convinced about them as a front tyre.
Up here in the north I rate the 2.4 as a front tyre for most use except the muddiest conditions; out in proper mountains with plenty of rock, it's great. Hopeless on the back though, as the sidewalls disintegrate from scuffing around on granite and not pinch proof enough. Better than a Nobby Nic though, which is certain death...
I know several folk who rate the 2.25 on both ends for lighter use, especially by smaller riders looking for a lightweight tyre.
dickie, are you running tubeless? just weighed a tube @ 165g. The Ust 26's were 775 and 780g. Not draggy at all,as good as 2.2 Nobby Nics imo. Found the grip of the X-King lacking, and the sidewalls developed wear / threads showing through after a few rides front and rear. In the end it's just what you fancy, think we all check the ratings before we part with our hard earned 😉 I must have gone through at least 10 sets of tyres looking for a good allrounder, much to my wifes dismay 😯
