What would you say is the maximum tyre width I could go to on an internal 23mm width rim?

Someone recently raised the point that not that long ago DH racers were riding 2.5" tyres on rims around that width. So 2.5", I reckon.

I've got a 2.4 TK on hope enduros on one bike and it works fine low or high pressure, on the other bike I have had a 2.4 MK on 21mm ID rim and it kept collapsing at low pressures. Does it depend on the rims?
