Anyone tried this?

I can't help thinking a sort of repeating Italian flag pattern separated by a blue nipple every 4th spoke would look really cool, although using silver nipples for the white bit would probably spoil the effect a little.

But then, I've turned out to be a remarkably poor judge of tasteful colour coordination on my bikes in the past... 🙁

Any horrible examples out there to dissuade me?

Did it back in the day yeah. Didn't bother when the wheel needed rebuilt after the nipples seized 😂

Wonder if you could get custom disc rotors to match it too? 😉

You'd need a 24 or 36 spoke wheel.

I've built a few doing 'rainbow/spectrum' ie: a 32 spoke wheel with groups of 4 going red/orange/gold/green/turquoise/light blue/blue/purple

You barely notice from more than a metre away, but if you look down at the front wheel nipples in sunlight as you're riding then you do get a changing spectrum effect whihc is nice and kinda cool for a moment or two.

Would do it again but only for my benefit, as above, nobody will notice from afar anyway.

Can you get coloured brass nipples or would they need to be aluminium? If they have to be aluminium then definitely not irrespective of the colour.

7 sets of 4 (blue, red, silver, green) = 28 hole?

If they have to be aluminium then definitely not irrespective of the colour.

I used to think the same but having taken a punt on some Sapim aluminium nipples this time last year have had my preconceptions dashed. They are harder/stronger than old aluminium nipples and the anodised coating serves as anti-corrosion. No seizing, no failures to date.

Yeah, I currently just have blue spoke nipples but they definitely look smart, a little gleam of colour in amongst the mud!

It took a couple of years for the DT Swiss alloy nipples to start corroding and splitting on my wheels. Never again.

I've always thought those industry nine rainbow ones were very good looking, maybe on a black frame

I like the rainbow, might have to do one of those!

Used to have tutti frutti random ones… (again, better-looking once they’re rolling and reflecting the sun)

I ****ing LOVE a rainbow wheel!

Most of my wheels have coloured alloy nipples unless its a particularly bright hub. I did my son's recent wheels in a Captain America Red/Blue/Silver scheme as that's what he wanted.

Nice vid Amedias!

I saw some oil slick brass nipples, maybe that would satisfy my inner magpie...

It took a couple of years for the DT Swiss alloy nipples to start corroding and splitting on my wheels. Never again.

I need to re-rim one of my rim brake wheels which has the alloy nipples, I'll see how that goes, if there is any indication of seizing or corrosion I'll maybe think again, otherwise will take my chances I think, I apply copper grease to spoke threads anyway, not sure why I started doing it but it has always worked for me.

Built up a bike for eldest daughter, she laced the wheels and did them with a repeating pattern of coloured nipples. Oh, and alternating black and silver spokes 🙂

Screw it, parts ordered.

DT 350s on Pacenti rims with Italian flag nipples and Vittoria tyres.

Nobody will ever guess that I'm pathetically attached to my scant Italian heritage 😀
