Anyone have experience of this combination - Mavic XM317 rims with 2.35 Minions? These rims are super cheap, pretty light and supposedly reasonably strong, but they're also pretty narrow. Just wondering if I'll get away with it, and if there will be a problem with tyres that width. Ta.
My SS 'hack' bike has a 319 on the front, and i have been running a 2.35 maxxis swampthing over the winter (its still on there, thanks to this awesome summertime). I havent had any problems with it, running at about 29PSI, everything rotates and stays put, but it does give a very rounded tyre profile.
For a 317/ Minion 2.35 it might be okay, but it will change the way the tyre handles compared to a wider rim, especially the biting point for the side lugs?
What do you plan on using the wheels for?
If you want really cheap try these

they should take a 2.35 tyre no bother.
If you are wanting something robust then take a look at the Mavic EN 321 and 521 rims, still very good value for money in my opinion but not quite as cheap as the 317.
317s with various 2.3 - 2.4 tyres on the HT here, never had any problems 🙂
Thanks for replies. Got EN321s on my Patriot, but I'm looking for something lighter to go on my hardtail, hence 317s. They will get some abuse though - it's a long-travel hardtail and I ride Calderdale and the Lakes, so lots of rocks and the occasional 4-foot drop. 317s are supposed to be surprisingly strong, and they're defo cheap and light.
I'd be worried about them for that sort of use with those tyres - they're pretty narrow.
519's or burlier would be better for the difference in price of a wheelset (£40 extra on a £200 package?) not that big a deal?
I personally wouldn't concider XM317's for that application but i am a fat clumsy oaf of a rider and would probably trash them. 319's are only a few pounds more and would give you better volume but are only 70g lighter than your EN321's.
Are you building the wheels yourself or is a shop doing it for you?
As others have said you will be aboe to fit the 2.35 tyre on the 317's, it may be slightly more baloon shaped due to the narrower bead but if you think they are right for you then go for it.
maxxis 2.35s arent very big, will be fine.
edit, pretty sure my mate is running 317s with 2.35 maxxis HR2. He did destroy the front wheel at Ae but that was due to a very bad landing, rear is doing fine tho.
I use them with those Min's, HR's and Ardents. No problems, very easy to mount tubeless. They take a proper hammering here in Spain, riding the rocky stuff day after day.
With low pressures around 25psi or lower I find they squirm a bit on off camber stuff and high speed corners, they start to leak sealant like this and have come off the rim once or twice. About 30psi is as low as I go.
I had 2.25's on mine tubeless and on anything below 30psi they became squirm-tastic and very prone to burping. I really like 25-30psi so sold them to get another set of wheels with Flow rims which I like much better.
