Mavic XA freehub removal

I've got a Mavic XA rear wheel with an HG freehub that I wanted to get off and regrease over the weekend. Never done it before but I was under the impression it was just a case of removing the driveside endcap and pulling the freehub off by hand (same as Hope, etc). End cap off ok but the freehub wouldn't budge. Can anyone confirm it should just come off, before I start getting medieval on it (next step would be to remove the endcap, reinstall the cassette then punch off the cassette+freehub from the back through the spokes).

There are two versions of XA wheelset/hub, and they use different freehubs - one like a Hope, the other is a ratchet ring style (like a DT swiss), they call it ID360 I recall.

I cannot remember off the top of my head without my wheels in front of me however remember that Mavic use circlips to preload the bearings - make sure your not pulling against a circlip that needs removing! The mavic website has technical diagrams etc.

Don't go smashing things until you've checked, I've never had anything seize or be problematic so your probably missing a step.

Hmm, Boost thru-axle, no obvious circlip when I took off the endcap. No idea what flavour of XA wheel it is, I bought it as a pig in a poke during the Evans clearout a couple of years ago. It's got c.4500km on it with zero servicing, everything spinning freely, but still...

I've actually got a Pro 5 hub and rim I've been meaning to build into a heavier duty wheel, I think I'll do that before attacking this Mavic again in case it goes wrong.

I'm thinking maybe a little corrosion between the bearing races and that central axle.

Yup you just pull them off, but they can stick

beware though the older style ones have pawls and springs that can fly off when you remove and are a pita to press down so you can refit (I once spent hours looking for a spring having had the genius idea of servicing my wheel the day before a trip away. After 2 hours I found the tiny spring on my bookshelf about 3 meters away!

Is that good or bad timing? Keep us posted on how it goes. Looking at the forecast I'm not touching mine for the next couple of weeks - just in case, like.

tried attaching an old cassette, removing the disc and then smacking the cassette with a drift and hammer, still not budging!

ended up, removing the non drive side end cap, a circlip and some washers and slid the whole axle out with freehub on the end, i think the ratchet ring inside the hub has become unbonded from the hub shell,- as its the older version the freehub has springs and pawls rather than newer ones with dt style ratchet rings.

To clarify, is this a hub where you were previously able to just pull off the freehub without problems?

turns out theres a circlip and a c-clip holding the axle in, just inside the top of the freehub, so definitely different from my other ones

in other news the ratchet has become unbonded from the hubshell & is rotating under force.

annoyingly this is a s/h hub i swapped in after the last hub failed in the same way and was creaking the way this one was before failure

i love these wheels too , light  comfy, fast and very tough (well the rims are this is the 3rd xa elite hub ive killed)

off to eBay, unless anyone knows how to rebond the ratchet in!?

I did suggest that 6 days ago 😉

Shame about the hub, I had the old type (with the 3 peice bonded hub) that failed but the later ones have been brilliant, and as you say incredibly tough for a relatively light wheelset.

I'd try Mavic Warranty, they were really good to me.

All the drawings are here - (make sure you choose the correct wheel, theres lots of variants, 3 peice or monobloc hubs, pawl or ratchet type freehubs etc.

This is the thing. After 25 years on Hope hubs with their clear documentation, I find the Mavic range a bit confusing. I bought this wheelset for the crazy price of £125 and, at that price, it's been incredible value, exceeding my expectations (bar having to deal with pinging spoke noises every six months). But I've no idea what it is! Putting the serial number into Mavic's wheel finder drew a blank. I think it's a 2019 id360 but I'm not sure. I'll have a proper look in a couple of weeks once I've got a backup wheel ready.

When I had the endcap off the other day there was no obvious circlip. There were slots that seemed to be the same as in this video; it's a threaded washer that holds in the bearings if that's the case.

So I have 2 E-XA elite wheelsets, on one the freehub just pulls off with a bit of force, the freehub internals were identical in both

this one had c-clip holding the freehub on, you can see it here with the axle slid out slightly (id removed the circlip on the non-drive side to let it do this)

PXL_20250430_174145378-EDIT.jpg

you can see how the c-clip sits here when its flush -and there was a circlip that sits around the c-clip but under the brassy-coloured lip of the freehub- that Ive removed

My problem is that the ratchet ring inside the hubshell is rotating, you can see where its moved, I marked it with pink paint reinserted the freehub and turned the freehub by hand

even though it rotates I cant actually get it out, but if possible I was wondering if I could loctite? it in place, what would be an unbreakable adhesive I could use?

Loctite bearing fit (or a.n. other bearing fit adhesive).

Thats a critical, high load/torque junction though, so I'd not be expecting it to definitely work. Have you tried contacting Mavic warranty? I found them really good, got an entire new f&r wheelset from them when my hub shell started debonding.

Sorry for my garbled messages, when I subscribed to Singletrack it wouldn’t let me update this chat.

here you go!

The clip you show in your pictures is not supposed to be removed. you remove all the washers etc from the brake side and pull the hub body and axel out from the cassette side, then you slide the hub body off the other end.

I have been replacing all the bearings etc in my Mavic XA's, I was struggling with putting that back together. This details it clearly. The wierd clip on the brake disc side was catchying me out.

it shows you how to remove and install.

I have just replaced my rear hub, bearings and cassette. Give me a shout if you have any questions.

Yep, that's a very clear video IF that's the freehub type you've got. I'm not sure mine is but will be finding out in the next couple of weeks when I swap out wheels.

I contacted Mavic support as I were buying cassettes etc, they were really helpful and normally responded within a day.

if you use their technical site use a pc rather than phone as when you hover over each wheel it gives you the date of manufacture. Mine is an XA 29 2018.
