A spoke in my rear speedcity rim has broken loose of the rim where the spoke bolts in. (does that make sense?)
The attachment in the rim is broken and there doesn't seem to be a way to access the inside of the rim, does this mean it's FUBAR'd?

I guess I could re-lace onto another 24 hole rim?

If it's just the insert that damaged you should be able to get a new one.

The insert screws into the rim from the outside so they're easy to change.

Speedcity wheels use the same setup as Crossmax and mavic UST rims. The outer wall of the rim has a threaded hole in it; the spoke and nipple sit inside a "nut" that screws into this hole in the rim from the outside.

If the "nut" bit has cracked or split then it can be replaced - just a case of getting a new "nut", however if the nut is OK but has come away from the rim then I doubt it can be repaired (I've had both problems with some of the original X3.1 UST rims).

Don't know how easy it is to get hold of the threaded nut things, but wheels certainly aren't dead if that is the problem.

Ah, it's the UST spoke cup - good stuff, seems you can only buy a pack of 40 though 🙁

Will try to charm the LBS into giving me a spare for a biscuit or something, cheers all.

acjim - if LBS charm doesn't work, drop me a mail with a postal address and I'll send you a couple of spoke cups if I can find them (I think I've kept a knackered X3.1 UST rim I kept for this purpose).

Stu you're a gent - I've found a spare in Brizl (good old bikeworkshop) but if that proves to be a wash out I'll drop you a mail.

ps: left hand crank a fell off this morning, why is it things break all at once? (puncture yesterday, followed by spoke cup failure and mystery crank flop today... boohoo)

I feel your pain. Snapped a Ti frame and then a XTR crank arm snapped!

I have Speedcity wheels on my commuter. The nut thing is made of cheese!
