Hallo!
I have a a mavic wheelset with the its 4 system, that uses a <b>preload </b>adjuster.

<iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/31i0XWJpI4Y?wmode=opaque" width="500" height="300" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>

In the end of the video, it indicates how to preload correctly the bearings.

1. when adjusting the preload, the video indicates to stop when contact happens. what does this mean? When you feel the cap engaging the hub body?

2. if i put very little preload, then it will spin almost friction free? is there any danger in little preload?

3. is it normal to have a klunk sound-lateral play- with the preload set? Cause if i eliminate the lateral play, there is quite some drag in the spin. To be honest, if i preload it as indicated in the video (when you feel the cap engaging the hub body, you release 1/8 turn), i get some lateral play.

found this answer, but don't know what he means by the bold letters:

ninfan

You’re overtightening them

That simple really – I guess you tightened it till the play went? That’s wrong, as the play disappears when the bearing is loaded.

Bike off ground, good spin on the wheel, now tighten the bearing adjuster with the little plastic tyre lever/pin spanner till you see it begin to drag/slow, now back it off quarter to a half turn and job done, your bearing tension is now set correctly and won’t loosen off

Cooeeee

what I meant was that, when correctly adjusted,  if you are holding the wheel in the frame and wobbling it it might feel like there’s still a teensy tiny bit of play in it, but in reality when you add 60-100kg of rider this disappears.

Yes, that’s normal, exactly the point that was being made. if you tighten it up thinking you should tighten till there’s no play in it, then it will be too tight (and begin to unwind in use, which is when people get into this trap of trying to wind it ever tighter thinking that it’s unwound because it’s too loose, but in reality it’s because it’s too tight) there seemed to be fewer issues with this when it went to ITS4(2) but it might have just been that 5he message had filtered through by then
