I have a brand new Mavic 819 UST rim and Nobby Nic UST tyre which just won't stay inflated.
I haven't even put it on the bike. It just goes flat in the garage over 24 hours.
I've checked in a water bath for leaks and found nothing.
I'm not using sealant as I want the thing to stay up before adding sealant for puncture protection.
What may I be missing?
Did you cover the sidewall and bead with soapy water? I recently got a non UST Nobby Nic up on Stans rim and did the soapy water thing first. It didn't completely seal so put some sealant in which did the trick after doing the tyre dance and riding the inflated up the street.
i had a similar experience to s f but i inflated without the aid of soapy water. they went up lovely and then down again.
soapy water round the rim and tyre and a track pump and pump til it pops. that's the tyre seating. why the water bath isnt showing owt is a bit weird.
I have done that with other tyre/rim combos but UST is supposed to just work without all that.
I know that sealant will probably sort it but being my first UST rim I'd like it to do what it's supposed to first.
I was just wondering if I'd missed something obvious.
I used an airline for inflating it and got the 'pop'.
Maybe I'll take it off and refit. See what happens.
Is it possible (and everything is) that I've got a bad rim or tyre?
What to check?
I can't comment on the UST Nobby Nic but found the non UST version very porous and needed a lot of sealant. I would expect the UST version to be better but they are quite light tyres so perhaps a bit of sealant is required to help keep them up.
I thought, maybe incorrectly, that the bead on a UST tyre was designed to fit a UST rim and that a UST tyre was non-porous.
If that's not the case, what's the point of a UST tyre?
I've not had the same problem with this combo. Not that keen on Nobby Nics but that's a different story. Never had a problem with UST staying up on a 819 rim. If you're getting all the popping as the bead seats then I'm surprised it's going down. Could be the valve leaking slowly perhaps? Or a slow puncture? Is it a new tyre too?
Finally found a 150mm section of the sidewall is porous!
Once you've the tyre seated, just add sealant anyway - that is what I do, UST, TLR or normal.
Second lots of warm soapy water.
check you have little rubber ring around the valve
blow up to about 50 psi to really seat them
I dont use soap or water I go in dry! 😯
sounds like the tyre - try Maxxis 🙂
