But I've never seen this problem before. Mate struggled tonight where he'd usually be solidly front of pack and then the rear of the bike binds to a halt. After the usual trailside tests it seemed that the drive side of the hub - sram hub I think - had a nut which span with the hub against the frame dropout. When the through bolt is tightened and you rotate the wheel, it's like the wheel is doing the thrubolt up tighter and binding it. Take wheel out and you can spin it freely so I'm thinking the hub internals seem fine. He'll take it to his lbs, who are a Whyte dealer, and they will sort but, whilst I'm sure it's a simple reason, I've no idea what and it's bugging me, albeit with limited repair skills.

Looking at it do you think it needs a lock nut?

What make\model hub is it?. Does the axle and freehub move freely if turning by hand when its out of the bike?.

Had any new bearings or taken it apart recently?, new bearing fitted but not fully pressed in or spacer missing?.

If it's not been fettled with recently my wild guess is seized bearing(s).

It's the nut that is turning with the hub and forcing the thrubolt to continue to tighten I think.

I thought bearings but it spins ok out of the frame.

Year old and not touched anything apparently.

happened to a new XT hub a few years ago on my mate's bike - cup/cone and locknuts. I think it was the locknut not locking

Happened to me on an XT hub too. No way of fixing it on the trail luckily I was doing an event so one of the marshalls eventually picked me up and took me back to base.

I had a front hub bearing start to seize and squeak a lot. Tightening the maxle sorted it. If it's cartridge bearings I'd imagine something that forced a not very tight through axle to turn could self tighten, and then if the cartridge is totally seized it'll be gripped by the spacers rather than free to rotate on the axle (as it would be when there's no clamping force on the axle, i.e. out of the bike).

Alternatively, cracked axle perhaps. The only time I've cracked one it was a Hope XC rear and the only symptom I got was creaking when I pedalled.

Nah i dont think so Philjunior as if you screwed it through and closed the mechanism it either immediately ceased the wheel turning or did so after a few revolutions.

That locking nut should not rotate with the wheel/hub in the frame.
