I have heard on the grape vine that the old SAAB showroom / garage on the A6 (Just after the rising sun pub through Hazel Grove on the way to Disley) is being turned into a big bike shop. (The shop fitters are there now)

I don't how true this one is but the same little bird told me its a big internet based bike retailer.

I think I like the sound of this, although there are bike shops approximately every 3 miles along the A6. Any idea who it is? If not I'll say Leisure Lakes, just because.

Im sure its going to be a bike shop as I heard it from someone who works in the business.

However, the name they said was wiggle............ I know me too!

I would think it more likley to be edinburgh co-op, Evans or Leisure lakes.

Its a big old floor space to fill so I expect it to be one of the big boys.

I feel sorry for Bike smithy, I've used him a few times for bits and peices and quick repairs etc. and found him to be very good.

YES santacruzi that is it!

There was a car with that written down the side parked up outside this evening.

I've never heard of them, so thought it was a distributor or something.

The web page seems to indicate they are going to be selling bikes and components.

That showroom seems to have had half a dozen businesses in it, all of which have gone bust. Was Saab, then something else, then it was selling camper vans for a while, they they disappeared.

I've spoken to the guy behind Sportive Nation a couple of times on the phone. It's a different business model to NWMTB, Royles and Bike Smithy. Good luck to them.

Never heard of Sportive Nation. Their website has four categories: Cycling, Running, Swimming and Triathlon.

Do you think they are aware that Triathlon is cycling, running and swimming?

I hope any new business does well.

IMO any bike shop that has friendly staff, gives good service and carries a good amount of component stock will do well.

No names metioned but I went into one bike shop not too far from the new one. I asked for a 32 tooth middle ring and they said, "we dont carry things like that, I can order you one"!

I said some years ago when SAAB garage closed down that it would make a great location for a bike shop. It's on the main route to get to some very poular riding spots (road and mtb) and its got huge amounts of carparking.

I think the other businesses that have tried to set up only had short term rents. They didn't seem to fit out the space or get proper signs made.

Cycled past it today on the way to/from work, it certainly looks like they're fitting it out as a shop rather than a showroom but the new sign outside said highlinecars.co.uk.

Proper garage-style sign, not just some advertising hoarding.

Fair enough. Maybe they've got half the showroom and a car dealership has the other half or something?

As I said, it certainly looked like the basics of a shop were being fitted but that didn't seem to match with the car dealership sign. I'll keep an eye on the place, I ride past it most days!

Looked in yesterday on the way home - there's a big new sign outside saying Sportive Nation and a branded Sportive Nation Cycling Team car parked up. The shop is still in the fitting out process but there's loads of bikes in there now and piles of boxes round the place.

It's apparently opening this weekend.

It's that big and full of bikes, you'd struggle to see staff in there.
I went in this morning (don't tell Jon at Bicycle Smithy - I ordered a new bike from the small shop of extreme biking happiness yesterday and Sportive Nation was mentioned. I got curious). Lot's of nice bikes. Very few price tags. Nice people working there. It feels very strange. Like a well daylight lit warehouse.
I have no cash so I couldn't spend it if I wanted to. Which I also didn't.
I think it falls in between the good old enthusiast and family LBS (Bicycle Smithy - Go there! Buy things! -) and a more boutique shop like Royles.

Bicycle Smithy is ace. they even do home delivery! Jon dropped off my headset bearings at my house this morning "on his way to work". From Jon's house to my house to Bicycle Smithy is quite some detour...
