Hi i'm thinking of respraying a new frame before I build the bike up as i'm a tart and I don't massively like the colour.

last time I had a respray done on an old frame, I had to spend hours scraping paint out of where the bearings sat, where the shock attached to the frame and so on.  BB and head tube wasn't a problem as I had used an old headset and BB in the threads.

How do I avoid this in the future? how do you properly mask off the bearings etc? Surely tape cut to fit falls off or paint gets under it?  Cork? bluetack?!?!  thanks in advance

perhaps I should ask about virgin boxes or beans and sausage recipes 🙂

Masking tape in where the bearings sit with bluetack pressed in to keep the tape in place. Or just bluetack.

I presume you are paying someone to paint it? Paint or powder coat? Stripping (blasting / dipping) the original paint off first? You can't mask it before blasting......

Powder coat might need high temperature tape so the glue doesn't melt.

You'll need to spend time explaining or leave written instructions for someone else to do detailed masking. You'll also have to be prepared to pay them for the time it takes to carefully mask all those extra bits.

I guess maybe you could ask for it back after stripping and mask it yourself with their recommended tape.
