Me and a mate are doing this Saturday....probably starting at Waterfoot.

Any pearls or wisdom or advice on this. Is there any where to fill up on water etc(i know its pretty bleak most the way round.

Is it better tackled clock wise or anti clock wise?

Thanks

Having done it about a month or so ago when very windy, I would say clockwise appeared to be the better direction. There were some steep descents (not technical) that looked a bit of a slog to peddle up in the anti-clockwise direction, notably up to Deer scout moor from Cliviger and out of Hebden bridge. The worst hill clockwise is Rooley moor which is long but not that bad. I just carried water with me but you could probably stop at Hebden for refreshments and fill up there?

Clockwise out of Waterfoot there are a lot of gates. I started in Bury and did a there and back to Cowpe before getting on the loop.

You can get water from outside the New Delight pub iirc. Details here: http://www.bridestonesbrewing.co.uk/brewery-tap/
I've only ever done it clockwise so can't comment. It's a nice ride though. Enjoy!

Anti Clockwise - hills are shorter and sharper
Clockwise - hills are longer and less steep but you have shorter downhills

Not loads of supplies on the route itself, but its not difficult to make the odd detour to get bits of food etc.

Gates around Waterfoot are a bit of a pain if you ride it solo.

Other than that enjoy.

Clockwise. Longer climbs, but all rideable.
There's very little food/water en route, but you can detour to Waterfoot Co-op (not in your case as you're starting there) or head to Hebden along the road/canal from Callis, pop into the Co-op and then climb up to Horsehold (behind Co-op, bear right) on the hugely steep road to rejoin the route at the top.

Oh, and there's a severe weather warning on for tomorrow, so it might be a bit wet. Enjoy 🙂

Cheers all - very useful info.

I will be taking plenty of water with me but i do tend to drink about 3 litres in about 4-5 hours. I will probably make the stop into Hebden to refuel. 🙂

any tips on breaking it down into a shorter route or a good starting point for doing some of it an as an out and back?

I am doing the MTL Challenge in September and need to build up to doing the full thing!

I'd be coming from Sheffield direction and I fancied trying to do a few chunks

It divides neatly into two almost equal parts, using the Tod to Burnley road. Start one half in Walsden and ride through to Holme Chapel (with a nice downhill back into Tod on the road) and do the other half from Holme Chapel (ride up the road from Tod, then you finish on a downhill by the car) and ride back round to Walsden.
