Hi all,
We're looking at Marsden near Huddersfield as a potential location for purchasing our first house. Are there any local routes? Would be nice to do some evening biking without the car.
Cheers.
Loads of great routes around Marsden area. Still finding new stuff around the Huddersfield/Marsden/Holmfirth area and I've been riding round here for years.
+1 to Yorkshire Pudding! It's awesome for riding, there are no end of good trails.
And it seems a really nice place from my few visits. Sort of envious, lucky you.
Can't go wrong!
Awesome, cheers guys!
yep yep pretty good here as near the Peaks,Hebbers,
Great place to ride, locals are a bit 'royston vasey' 😛
Seriously, it's a lovely place with great access to some cracking riding.
Yep - mostly cheeky but I've never had a problem....Great place to ride
- true enough of some of the true Marsden Born and Bred 🙂locals are a bit 'royston vasey'
Hell Yeah - moved here in 2002. Current plan is to only leave when taken out in a box.....Seriously, it's a lovely place with great access to some cracking riding.
Great village vibe, strong sense of community, good food and drink outlets and yeah, the riding ain't bad 😉
the sheep seem up for it too round ere.
Great place to ride and live
Plus points for me within 5 mins of leaving home I can be easily on numerous different routes which can all be linked and ensure a good choice of descents back into Marsden on way home ( 2no of which are a good 3 miles of descending ie wessenden and pack horse road) I think there is a video of some one coming down wessenden on you tube and they finish in the riverhead pub ( great beer and food)
finish in the riverhead pub
AFIK all routes round here finish in the Riverhead... 😉
Decent ale?
Done a few good rides round there and the locals were dead friendly. I once got off the train to be officially welcomed by an old chap who wished me a good days riding. Spot on!
Lived in Holmfirth for 2 years, wasn't working for 1 of those years; so spent a lot of time on the bike (or foot).
Was unimpressed. Not THAT many trails really; quite samey, always seemed windy, gritty and just not quite fun.
OK- there are a few nice evening loops, and a couple of cheeky bits.
I'm the first to admit that I was no route oracle, but I did cover a fair area quite comprehensively.
Maybe better areas to look at if riding is high on your priority list.
aye stanley but nice and central for either the peaks or hebbers
loads and loads of cheeky stuff if you know where to look, been riding round here off road for over 20 odd years.pretty lucky to live and ride round here imo.
Gonna be moving to Scape myself at xmas. Already been scouring the maps & although not tons of B/ways that side of the valley, there seems to be an abundance of 'walled tracks' so between that & tapping a bit of local knowledge & my calderdale/holme valley experience, i'm well looking forward to it.
Welcome to God's country, my friend. Lots of great riding here, but you have to be prepared for quite a bit of (hilly) road sections to join up the dots.
Loads of riding from 'Scape' and loads within a short drive eg. Calderdale or Holme Valley or both doable on longer rides. You'll have great fun adventuring and finding all the good stuff, just remember just because it's marked on a map doesn't mean anyone human has been down it in the last century! Everything is fair game around here though just be polite and all the walkers will be really friendly! Only downside about Scape means all your rides will finish on a climb, sometimes a really big climb!
I am in Holmfirth, loads of stuff all over the shop round here and Marsden. Seeing as there are so many of us from the valleys on here, may I suggest a group ride, based around Riverhead?

Oooh, I reckon I could manage to stagger the two minutes from my house to the Riverhead for a STW pootle. 🙂
Marsden is ace. There are better places to live for riding, yes, but there's enough good stuff round here to have kept me happy for nearly 20 years now (on and off).
What night guy's say meet at 7-00pm?
Group ride sounds good. Never ridden over that way.
I'm in Lindley, Huddersfield and have done some trails around marsden -I like the one dropping down to Eastergate from near Buckstones. I quite fancy being 'shown round' on a group ride too, any night but Monday for me. 🙂
Colne Valley, land of the legendary cvmbc 8)
Next Tuesday 20th meet at riverhead pub (outside) at 6-30 pm
Who is up for it????
Oh yes, don't need much of an excuse for a ride out that way!! Count me in.
Would love to, but Tuesdays are the one evening I cannot ride! Really keen to meet some folks though, a few of us normally ride on Thursday nights, can a ride be sorted for any night but Tuesday? Or maybe a Saturday all day ride?
Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday and I'm in, well 3 of us will be 🙂
Next Wednesday would suit me, just ordered a replacement light as mine has died, so as long as it comes (its a dx light from the UK warehouse), I will be there.
Excellent, is 6:30pm ok for everyone. Its good for us.
OK, yep, it's in the diary, will let you know if there is a problem with the lights.
So is it definitely wednesday now? If so, I should be there. It was jonny r m's idea in the first place so let's hope he can do wednesday.
BTW, on Saturdays Huddersfield StarWheelers do a mountain bike ride starting at 10am, different locations each week and you can go as fast or slow as you like, there's lots of stops for re-grouping and they're a very sociable bunch. Aim to finish by 1pm. Check out their website and forum for more details.
So, 6:30 Wednesday at The Riverhead?
That's a yes from me.
yeah fair point I didnt mean to jump in with both feet, must have just got excited 🙂It was jonny r m's idea in the first place so let's hope he can do wednesday.
If all else fails I could loan you one.if there is a problem with the lights.
Thanks for the offer of the loan of lights, Steve210, will let you know!
Might be a few more coming over from our Thursday night lot, should be fun!
Hmm. 6.30 will require special dispensation as it means I won't be around for the boy's bathtime. I'll do my best to make it out though.
Might get over myself, know there is loads of stuff to do in the Holme and Colne Valley. Love to climb Wessenden myself but one of my favorites is Ramsden Road up or down.
Wessenden = Down 🙂
No probs for weds I'll bring a few more
Wow, going to be a mahoosive group there! Do we all need name badges? PS the only way to do Wessenden is by the goat track.
got to agree with you there - Wessendon is a little tame. What do you think of the drop from goat track to the deer farm? Love it!
Is there a planned route for Wednesday? Or a rough idea?
I might try and get over for a Wednesday ride, work and baby permitting.
Some rides are a lot better than others, but yes they are a very sociable bunch. Headfirst, do you ride with HSW then? I do occasionaly, but thought I was the only STWer there - apart from the odd guest apperence by The Sanity Assasin.BTW, on Saturdays Huddersfield StarWheelers do a mountain bike ride starting at 10am, different locations each week and you can go as fast or slow as you like, there's lots of stops for re-grouping and they're a very sociable bunch.
I like the route that runs from the standege cutting across the moors on the Pennine Way and fork down the moorland on to the fast descent track which brings you out at the Hey Green Hotel. Very rutted and technical, in the dark anyway!
It's a climb to get up there to start with though, maybe to boggy for some too 🙂
Packhorse trail sounds good in the dark! Got a good route up from the goat track which would be mint in the dark
Think you're forgetting a HSW member Ben! Work can't be much of an excuse (assuming you still work in Slawit) and your baby is the same age as mine and I'll be out!
Dave.
Sounds good, that drop to hey green is awesome, only done it in daylight though, the route across from standedge is great too, don't know if this is too long, but how about:
Up Wessenden to the deer farm then right across dam to paving slap route across tops to standedge, then standedge to drop to hey green?
Just a thought.
A good route is from riverhead up Meltham rd turn right onto track up to shooters nab then turn right at top on the top catch until it meets wessenden down wessenden until the 3rd reservoir left onto pennine way follow pennine way up past black moss res up through cutting across A62 back onto pennine way over to buckstones rd where we pick up the top of eastergate (pack horse rd) and then enjoy the descent back into Marsden by hey green then back on road to riverhead for a nice pint
PPS bring your night lights
That's funny you two just described the same route basically but in totally different ways. One with local trail slang and the other with official road names.
I reckon both of them are good 🙂
Might be a fair distance though depending on skill and staminer level of different riders.
PPS definitely a bring your lights, bigger the better.
Steve
My route is exactly the same apart from I have extended the beginning by joining wessenden after about 4 mile which Will give us a nice 14 mile max evening ride?
Right ok, I must have mis read that bit.
Well Im up for that. Its difficult to choose a route when theres loads of little cool routes that can be joined up to make bigger ones.
I like the river crossings before the climb up to the slabs, got my feet very wet when I misjudged it last week, its a fair old climb up too the standedge 🙂
I'm up for the jonny rocky mountain route, if we are short of time we could cut out half of the goat track and drop from the goat track straight to the deer farm - its fun, particularly doing it sideways
So the goat track is the path that follows the top catchwater drain, then. Got it.
Think you're forgetting a HSW member Ben! Work can't be much of an excuse (assuming you still work in Slawit) and your baby is the same age as mine and I'll be out!
Ah Dave. Whoops, sorry. Didn't realise you still had a bike with fat tyres! Thought your only HSW rides were with the roadie lot.
I'm only using my daughter as a potential excuse, as if I come out on Wednesday, I'll not see her that day (I'm at work by the time she gets up).
Still, hoping I'll be there.
So Wednesday it is guys
Lights on
Mud guards on
Waterproofs on
Look forward to it
Has anybody tried Pule Hill in the pitch dark? Thats the one on the left when you cycle upto Manchester Road near the stanedge cutting.
Its a good climb and v.steep drop, might be a good idea if time becomes short on Wednesday evening?
Not sure if I know that one by name but may have ridden it.
Should be a good ride which ever route we take. See you all tomorrow night!
Excellent ride last night lads, It was nice to ride a few new bits that have been under my nose for the 20 0dd years I've been riding, but never knew about.
Where were you then Dave?and I'll be out!
Was unimpressed. Not THAT many trails really; quite samey, always seemed windy, gritty and just not quite fun.
I grew up/from the area and I found alot of the riding the same as you. With exception for some descents that ended up/around/into Berry Brow.
Then theres the stuff around the old Storthes Hall hospital- still not great IMO.
I'd LOVE to be proven wrong. Seriously, as it kills two birds for me, drop hora 'squad off
Of course there are Hebden-style cheeky descents but there are abit of a trek inbetween?
stevo210 your last two photos kinda say it all to me.
Great ride last night, despite the weather being a bit rubbish. Thanks to all for showing me so much new stuff. Good to meet some new faces (and a surprise old one!), and sorry I couldn't hang around for a pint. It'd be grand to go out again some time soon - drop me a line via my STW username at gmail.com if anyone's organising something Marsden-based.
(Tom, on the Canyon.)
Hi All, yeah it was a good ride last night despite the weather, the route detour turned up some interesting little drops that I'm sure we'll be linking in to our regular routes.
As Tom said really nice to meet new faces (and 2 surprise old ones for me!) its a small world!.
Definitely will arrange another ride soon.
(Nathan, a surprise old one 🙂 )
Yep, great ride, been riding round here for 10+ years and went on some new stuff, superb. Definitely need to do it again, got some great routes from New Mill.
Rich (on the enduro)
Ditto guys really enjoyed the stuff I havn't done before so thanks for that
Do we want to arrange to do another next weds?
