You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Well.. He's on his way.. 250 miles a day!
Live tracker

Trailer..
Can he do it?
15mph average for 16 hours a day, for 80 days, is staggering! Having worked my way up to doing ~47 miles in ~2hrs50mins with five cat4 South Downs climbs recently, trying to imagine this effort by Mark is mindblowing.
At least this time he has a proper support crew, so bike will be far lighter without all the touring gear, but even so...
This just popped up on the BBC news website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-41262522/cycling-around-the-world-in-80-days
I think Mark Beaumont might just be the toughest man alive lol
Nah - Wayne Shelford takes that title, read the third paragraph in the "Career" section. (Gentlemen may wish to be sitting comfortably)
You can track him live here:
What the trackers lack is a countdown in miles and time, so that you can see how on target he is.
So today is the 75th day and he has roughly 900 miles to go, is that right?
about right but not following minute by minute ^^ updates here - latest updates focus more on current hills/temp than progress - recall reckoned had around a spare half day when flew out of US - so looks tight but looks relaxed and ready to really push if has to

edit forget to say Sh1t impressive
not the downhiller then..
I've followed his attempt on twitter, and what he's done so far is incredible.Spending 16+ hours a day in the saddle for 2 and a half months is not something I'd fancy doing.
He's going to smash the previous record by about 43 days which is amazing.
Take that with a pinch of salt. He's going to smash the previous record by about 43 days which is amazing.
Guinness changed the rules, and most previous rides weren't ratified.
Mike Hall (blimey I miss reading about his exploits RIP) did it in 91 days 18 hours unsupported. But that doesn't include travel time, which would make it 107 days according to wikipedia, but then as that didn't matter for the record there was no incentive to speed that bit up.

That little warning was enough to jog my memory so although I'd opened the page in a new tab, I had the good sense to not read it.
The knowledge of what happened to him is still enough to make my left nut ache slightly for some reason...
Supported vs unsupported, yeah whatever.
Doing that sort of mileage on consecutive days is nails.
Mark discusses supported/unsupported in this Guardian article from yesterday
“But when I originally cycled around the world unsupported 10 years ago [setting a then-record of 194 days], I described myself as an adventurer. These days I’m an athlete. It’s all about the performance....."
supported/unsupported - I feel its a bit like saying Murray was a crap tennis player when he wasn't actually number 1 in the world - being only one of the best and performing at a level that 99.9% of the population couldn't achieve seems to count for nothing to some people
Hang on - his attempt 10 years ago was unsupported? Apart from the masseuse he had following him round Europe and the car meeting up with him at regular intervals?
Either way it's bloody impressive!
Been following him on Facebook, its totally nuts 16 hours cycling a day, then getting up and doing it again and again.
Amazing.
How on earth do you keep a healthy bum for that?
I'm sore after 4 hours mtb.... 😯
It's an amazing feat either way but it's still relevant to consider the method employed when comparing records.supported/unsupported - I feel its a bit like saying Murray was a crap tennis player when he wasn't actually number 1 in the world - being only one of the best and performing at a level that 99.9% of the population couldn't achieve seems to count for nothing to some people

I think it's better to think of them as different things.
Yeah, exactly. How much of a difference it makes is up to you, but I still think it's worth making a distinction. By putting 'unsupported' in bold I wasn't trying to diminish Mark's achievement in any way - it's absolutely incredible! It's an amazing feat either way but it's still relevant to consider the method employed when comparing records.
The point of my post was just to point out that the record-breaking margin was a bit distorted due to the rule changes. He's still going to smash whatever time you want to look at!
Hard to see anyone attempt to beat it to be honest (although I guess I thought that after Mike Hall's record too).
