Currently for planning rides I use memory map that is loaded up on a laptop. Its a bit clunky so I was wondering what is out there that I could replace it with on the next laptop I get - I would like something that works off line as I wont always have internet connection. Is there such a thing? I am very unlikely to ever want to upload routes to a gps etc (I don't have one)
The princess uses the OS app which is great but obviously its on the web.

Does and doesn’t. If you buy the paper maps they come with a code to allow you to download the digital equivalent to your phone; it’ll then locate you on the map using the phone GPS even if there’s no signal. Didn’t have a play with the routing options when testing this though.
ah tobago I did not know that, thanks. Sadly I already have a lot of the OS paper maps so I guess you can't do it retrospectively?
It depends how old they are; I’ve got a couple of maps from three years ago that came with digital codes. Not sure how much further back they go…

Tracklogs. Does exactly this.

Depends where you are, if someone has the disks to cover your area, I’m sure we coukd sort you out with a download.
I’ve just signed up to Komoot, offline maps and syncs to my garmin 830. Enjoying it so far.
I bought a bunch of os maps with the scratch off code so I can load them onto the Android app.
It's ok but it's not without issues;
The app has a warning that comes up multiple times when there's no data / signal, something that happens frequently in the great outdoors. It works, but likes to warn you, multiple times. Pretty stupid.
Version 1 you zoom out and still see bridleways etc. Current version 2 when you zoom out to better plot a route it changes to a road map, making it difficult to get an overview of routes. Pretty stupid.
When you load a gpx it doesn't tell you which way the gpx goes. Pretty stupid.
When you load / plot a route, you can't then export it without a subscription even if you paid for paper maps. Pretty stupid.
If you open it to just check your location (not route following) it keeps running and gps stays on draining battery unless you forcibly close it. Pretty stupid.
You can have it on multiple devices and routes / maps are shared between them. Ok that's a pretty nice feature.
The loss of detail on zoom is probably the number 1 reason I'd like to change to something else, the rest are just niggles really. A few months ago the whole system was borked when they changed to v2, lots of email apologies etc so it's not like we are dealing with a class development team, which is a shame as the source data is generally good.
I use ViewRanger which is really good. Full OS mapping, route suggestions and can download off line / export to gpx etc. £20 per year and can use on up to 5 devices so can't complain!
On the OS app you can download any map area you like for offline use.
I’ve used Anquet Maps for years for this very reason. www.anquet.com
I used to use Orux maps on an old, small Android phone.
I now use OS maps with a subscription. Download maps for offline use on the phone. Print map parts at home. Add routes. Worked very well in the Lakes last week.
