Man makes wheel. Wheel is round and lasts one ride without killing man or becoming square. Man happy.

Actually I am quite chuffed with myself. Que the doom mongers telling me it will not last a week.

That is all.

The first set of wheels I ever built are still round and true. Wheel building isn't hard - wheel building quickly and efficiently takes a bit of practice 😉

Yes I imagine it does. Timeline as follows:
1 hour lacing then unlacing.
20 mins watching UTube to see how to do it correctly.
30 mins lacing the wheel again.
30 minutes for tea and cake.
30 mins turning a set of old forks into a trueing stand.
2 hours tensioning an trueing.

So working on my maxim of working out my hourly rate and seeing if it worth paying someone else to do. Buying wheels is the way forward.

Oh, sure - but it's fun to build things yourself.

Thats pretty good going - my first wheel took 2 evenings. I kept ruining it just before it was finished and having to start again. Perhaps it was beginners luck 😉

Sheds, various contraptions to cure & smoke pig, DIY van conversion and heaps of other stuff but wheels fall into the pay a man (or woman) to do it right in a sensible amount of time - never felt ripped off as I know how much effort goes into a good one.

If you are interested and are in Scotland, Shand Cycles are doing an introductory course in wheel building according to a Twitter...

Glad i gave it a go. Would I build another? Not unless it was something i could not buy off the shelf.
On that subject, does anyone know where I acan source some really light 24 inch rims for the eldest cursings bike.

Actually, just seen what the local builders charge in Melbourne. I think I may persevere once i seen how this one holds up.

While over the water here I'm using beer/favours/cash so that keeps the costs down here 🙂

Agree - I tend to buy wheels online and then rebuild them when the rims wear out as hubs last longer than rims.

Saying that I just built up an Alfine 8 onto a trail 26in rim since this combo was not available to buy anywhere - and then built the front wheel to match.

So it can be useful
