I’m with the Fell Rescue Team who said ‘we wish him all the very best, and a full and successful recovery’...

How do we know he wasn't local? That area is about 15 minutes ride from the centre of town. He could well have been following guidance, just got really unlucky.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Could have been doing something completely innocuous and been very unlucky.

Worth repeating that at no point has the NHS actually said "do not ride because you will break our capacity", nor are they saying there is no capacity in A&E.

Obviously most of us have been sensible and gone with the "not far, not gnar" approach

So, without knowing where he's from and how he hurt himself some of us are getting the pitch forks out?

I've seen loads of summer cyclists out recently, the ones with jumpers tied round their waist and no helmet. It's possible the head injury is from a small fall onto a rock.

My friend I normally ride with who is very competent fell off last week on something or nothing because his mind was elsewhere and he wasn't concentrating which is understandable considering what's going on. He thinks he's broken some ribs, could have been a lot worse with bad luck. He wasn't being rad, rash or not responsible.

Let's wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.

I can't pretend that there's no chance I'll have an accident on the bike during lockdown.
Nor can I guarantee I won't have an accident when running.
Nor can I guarantee I won't have an accident when walking.
Nor can I guarantee I won't have an accident whilst doing DIY.
Nor can I guarantee I won't have an accident whilst driving.

Hope he gets better soon, I'm certainly not going to be a **** about someone else's misfortune.

Trails are innocuous until they're not. I had a moment yesterday on a local trail (10 mins ride from my door) which I've ridden a fair few times. The conditions are great just now - dry and fast, and I just got carried away having too much fun. One lazy bunnyhop over a tree root and I was being spat out the front at pace. Got away with scrapes and bruises but I've felt like an idiot since as it could have been a lot worse.

I was by the river stalking some beavers and while crawling a bloody bramble lacerated my eyeball. Open nerve pain ouch.

Stay safe all!

A few years ago I was following a track across a field, hardly more technical than a fire road, and caught the edge of a rut that was hidden by grass. I then face planted the only bloody rock in the entire field! No broken bones but a lovely shiner for a few days.

Hope the guy is OK however it happened.

Hard to have any sympathy.

You're lovely you are.

Obviously he drove 700 miles to get there and was riding with 49 mates, they just legged it. The injury was sustained because he was riding the full on gnar and tried to do a 72ft drop.

Really not enough detail in that article to make any kind of judgement, all you can do is hope he's ok.

Yeah, full recovery an all that, but he’s **** lucky the air ambulance is actually operating at this time.

Whilst the air ambulance was called the casualty was transferred by MRT to a wheeled ambulance. The air ambulance was not running for a while due to C-19 staff redeployment however the powers that be re-commissioned a couple of days back as presumably because there is capacity in the system. But at any given time one or both air ambulances (two in Yorkshire) mightn't be available because of operational reasons such as maintenance or use elsewhere. Whilst they are a super useful asset that can make the difference between life / death / life-changing outcomes, we can't and shouldn't depend on them as was the case here. I don't believe the network of ambulances, paramedics and trauma care facilities is made particularly more robust with the addition of two helicopters, but I am not a doctor / paramedic.

EDIT: Get well soon injured dude.

I "crashed"at the end of March - totally innocuous slow speed over the bars incident (on a trail I've ridden a hundred times) that saw me fall headlong into a ditch and land on the top of my head - 5 days in orthopaedic ward flat on my back and 4 broken vertebrae for my trouble.....recovering slowly

Don't judge folks, it could be you......

My worst mtb crashes except one have all been on slow speed innocuous stuff. Probably because I switch off a bit when the perceived risk is low. Same with skiing injuries

From the photo I’m fairly sure I know where this spot is, and it’s certainly not one of the more techy bits on the moor

Hopefully he’s ok, and hopefully the MSM don’t see it as something to vent their vitriol on.

Severe facial and head trauma suggested high speed impact, especially if wearing a helmet, still hope the guy is okay though, I've been a bit risky myself so can sympathise, at least until we find out what really happened, mind you this damn pandemic could go on and on into 2021.

Picked this up from the comments on a news website, mostly in response to some unpleasant comments, not dissimilar to some of those above...:

This is a friend of mine.
He was riding on a path permitted by the council about 20 mins away from home. This moor has I think 5 different boundaries which some don’t permit cycling but Ilkley moor does, so fact check he was doing absolutely nothing wrong. He is a keen and experienced cyclist and this was just a horrendous accident.
Please, rather than be a loathsome troll with out any information or understanding, spare a thought for his wife, children, family and friends who are unable to visit him during this lockdown and consider the lasting impact this accident may have.
You horrible, horrible people

I hope he's OK and makes a full recovery.

Landing face first onto a rock doesn’t need much speed to cause a serious issue

Where he crashed wasn’t a particularly challenging area. Probably just unlucky.

Now he’s been to hospital where he was probably exposed to COVID.

It’s now about whether he was wrong to ride/did something your not supposed to, it’s all about how much potential risk you are prepared to take at the moment with getting sub optimum care and more potential exposure to COVID.

Still he will have at least got a free COVID test when he turned up at hospital.

Hope he gets better soon, but he can’t have been that bad for them to do a land transfer

I was about a mile from home last week on the road bike and hit a cat that ran out on me. Hit the deck and had to go to a&e. I wasn't going that fast or riding beyond what was sensible - I just wouldn't have fallen off under normal circumstances if that cat didn't come across the road.

So as per most the other comments, people should be kind in these times and not be too quick to judge.

And as always whenever I have had to call on local hospital, I couldn't speak highly enough of the treatment I received.

Even the most innocuous activity isn’t without risk. You can reduce probability of serious implications - but you cannot remove it.

Accidents happen.

It’s sad that STW is no better than The cesspool of a newspaper’s online comments section. Those who criticised should have a word with themselves.

I hope the poor guy heals soon.

Indeed! That'll teach me not to read the last line of a crappily written story. "Airlifted" in the headline, whereas he was not airlifted at all. Still, hope he's on the mend, like.
