Never met him either, but shocking news. Best wishes from me to him, get well soon x
And massive respect to the people who did CPR on him. I really hope that I can do that, should I be in that situation ever. I've had training, but query if I could do it in practice.
Heal quick fella š
Just give him a camera, and the primal urge to take pictures of nurses bottoms will pull him through.
Latest update from his son James on fb:
I'm afraid dad is back on oxygen, they are doing what they can to manage his lungs, they have put him on his front again to help him breathe and get his stats up. He's been put on some more broad spectrum antibiotics but he's also back on sedation and noradrenaline. One of the boggies was his doctor today
Hang in there.
Don't lose hope.
Get well soon SFB
Thanks for the update. Must be really tough for his son. Stay strong.
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Fight it, SFB. Fight it. Don't let it win. Fight.
flashy's right, you know
come on Simon, it's just another hill
you know what he is like, he will just be dragging out the argument with death for his own pleasure.
Glad he appears to be pulling through though and healing vibes
Get better soon, SFB's photos always remind me of growing up in the south lakes.
All the best SFB, get well soon.
Get well soon
Best wishes!
Come on SFB. We're all with you mate.
"One of the boggies was his doctor today"
Eeek - just imagine waking up in hospital, and seeing one of your bike buddies, wearing a white coat and stethoscope šÆ . No wonder he's 'confused' and needs 'sedation'
(Best wishes for a full recovery, Simon)
Get well soon!
Do watch the Vinny Jones vid that clareymorris linked to earlier. Then if this ever happens on a ride you're on, you'll know what to do.
Because some people knew what to do, SFB is alive. Well done.
Oh yes...and calling the ambulance is the first and best thing you can do.
Get Well Soon (manly hug)
Oh crikey, just come across this. Hope for the best of recoveries SFB
Likewise that St Johns Ambulance app posted earlier is well worth a look. Install and browse through as a reminder (rather than just relying on it when the time comes). I remember bits from doing CPR in Scouts (Cub Scouts in fact) but that was a *very* long time ago.
Once again healing vibes.
C'mon SFB.
Plenty of bums unphotographed and footpaths unridden yet.
It's gone quiet...
Come on SFB- go for it fellah!
Good luck SFB.
And good show to great mates.
Only just seen this. Healing vibes!
Ok, so who's bum gave him the heart attack? We must see pictures!
I don't think I ever agreed with sfb on anything but seeing as the bog trotters are such a large group must prove he's a decent bloke I'm real life™
Best wishes and well done to your fellow riders!
All the best Simon for a speedy recovery.
Heal well SFB.
Thoughts are with the whole SFB clan, and hats off to those who were the right people, in the right place, at the right time. Awesome!
Get well soon.
Simons brother has this evening reported that he's moving wards again for infection control purposes. He is still sedated but his breathing is improving, although he's not yet off the ventilator.
He's still got a long way to go, but 'stubborn Simon' is hanging in there.
Houns - I know that Simon will be reading this thread in a few weeks, and will no doubt in the first instance be overwhelmed by the messages of support, but will then feel depressed as he thought he'd previously managed to upset, antagonise and generally deter the entire online community, just because he can š
I met him in person before experiencing him online, and its no coincidence that me, and everybody else who meets him this way, realise what an outstanding, admirable person he is, before sitting back with a wry smile watching him argue his way through thread after thread, playing with those who bite like a cat with a piece of string. š
Get well soon. No arguing on stw - doctors orders.
Incredible performance from those that administered the CPR - really quite something. Very sad to hear the news and wish Simon well and a strong recovery.
Thanks for the update. Get well soon Simon.
All of the best SFB for a speedy recovery
Keep up the good fight chap!
Thank you for the updates. š
Indeed, get well soon SFB
What can say that hasn't been said already? Simply - Get Well Soon Simon.
T
I rarely, if ever, agreed with you Simon but best wishes to you and your family for the now, I particularly liked the previous comment about you being currently engaged in an argument with Death, and in the future when youre back with us Im particularly looking forward to your thoughts on the "might I suggest a bell" thread š
Bivvyed out last night so had a had plenty of time to think about things/Simons situation so today I rode as though it was my last, riding as much cheeky as possible but doing my best not to upset people ,did not have chance to photograph bums so I failed on that count!
C,mon Simon sort yourself out my photography is crap we need more shots of the Lakes/Dales from your lense š
**** me, how did I miss this?!? SFB to the forum please. Heal quick you old bugger. x
Recover quickly & completely please, mate.
We need more photos of arses on bicycles.
All the best sfb
I just made the connection between sfb and the three peaks this weekend.
It reminded me of how much he liked a 'discssion' about cyclocross rules š
C'mon SFB, you can't leave us like this. The CXers will win otherwise!
Indeed all the best to SFB
Always read the recurring cardiac threads and can tell you Simon will benefit from all encouragment on his journey to recovery. Don't know him but core fitness and good medical care go a long way, keep up the good work!
geetee1972
Can any medics comment on the nature of a heart attack in someone who is a regular cyclist and therefore likely to be pretty fit? I think it would be a useful discussion here and help raise awareness of potential heart conditions that fitness won't prevent but could help reduce the impact of.
geetee1972. If you start the thread mentioned above I've got some observations from the point of view of someone of reasonable fitness who has had a heart attack. It was a year before I was back on the bike. Retrospectively there were plenty of signs, which I would recognise now but I largely ignored these until it was too late.
Only last week one of the group I was with was behind everyone else on the first hill, very little warm up and he ended up turning back, I need to speak to him.
These early signs. Yes please. Pook collapsed on a ride once and we were flumoxed as to what he had.
Cold induced broncho constriction mark from riding up a hill in -12 conditions without a face mask and chatting to binners. That's what the doc said
Good job you had a Dr who knew binners, Pook.
Come on SFB!
TWICE Though. Second time was alot milder-I'd say +6c. You just sat down not feeling right?.... If you got a ECG from the Docs I'd shut up. Anywaaay š
Nah it was below freezing again - remember that fog? Anyway,
Any news on sfb?
Any news on sfb?
Update from his brother, James:
SIMON
no fireworks today..they have kept him under whilst they deal with a kidney complaint.physio reports improving lung situation..figures all good
To put a good spin on it, why bring him round to discomfort? They are happy he'll come round just fine and just tidying a few things up first.
Just seen this, get well soon SFB!
Nice to see SFB getting to the brow of the hill. Another couple of pedals..
We're all rooting for you, SfB. Come on, man!
Good news, hope your on the mend soon, once you're able to read this. Having said that I'm not sure you'll get through 9 pages of good will without a relapse. Hand on in there.
Having said that I'm not sure you'll get through 9 pages of good will without a relapse.
Never mind that, 9 pages on STW without a SINGLE ARGUMENT! š
Keep fighting, SFB, keep fighting!
Never mind that, 9 pages on STW without a SINGLE ARGUMENT!
That's surely a situation which needs to be remedied - come on SFB, you're just the man for the job!
Get well soon.
I really can't believe I've just seen this post. Only picked it up from the cardiac thread.
I've been on many rides with Simon and this has been a real shock. I'm a few years older than Simon and you never know what's round the corner. Never thought about it until now but at least one of my regular riding friends is CPR trained.
All my best wishes to Simon & his family for a speedy recovery.
The lovely Pennine has just alerted me to this news, very shocking and thank god for those who knew CPR on the ride.
All the very best to you SFB for a speedy recovery.
I've only just seen this too. I only met him the once on a Boggies ride that was more a slide and land on your arse than an actual ride, but he seemed a great guy.
All the best for a speedy recovery!
Late to the party as ever, but just wanted to wish SFB the best for a speedy recovery. There are far too many good people getting injured and/or seriously ill this year...
+1.....always liked reading Mr Barnes. Best to you.
Get well soon SFB.
A few years ago my wife and I chanced on a poor soul down by the side of the road near Kippford. We administered CPR; sadly, we never got him back.
I know though (because his son told me the next day) that it gave the family a lot of comfort that someone had tried. You never know when you're going to either need to do it, or need it done to you.
Get well soon Mr B!
Update from his son on FB:
Well dad is awake and fighting me and the nurses, he wants out. He hasn't changed a bit
Yep, sounds about right!
That's fantastic news.
Yay. Good to hear he's got his grumpy cantankerous old mojo back.
Great news. Wonder if he's asked for his camera to be brought in yet š
Great news. Someone hand him a camera.
Ahh that's great to hear. That good news has made my day!
Is he taking pics of the nurses bums yet? š
Outstanding news. That's made my day.
Great news. He's beating the odds big time there. Again, best wishes to both him, his family and well done to the first aiders, first responders and other clinical teams that have done so brilliantly.
thats great news, up the Barnes!
do you reckon the doctors might sedate him again to get some peace? š
that's a nice start to the weekend.
that's good news š
That's very good news.
Been keeping a daily check on updates. Really pleased to hear he's winding up the medical team.
news of the Most Excellent variety š
Good news that he's pretty much carrying on where he left off. So glad to hear that he's making progress.
Great news. Someone hand him a camera.
This. We demand photos of Nurses arses!
