Never met him either, but shocking news. Best wishes from me to him, get well soon x

And massive respect to the people who did CPR on him. I really hope that I can do that, should I be in that situation ever. I've had training, but query if I could do it in practice.

Just give him a camera, and the primal urge to take pictures of nurses bottoms will pull him through.

Latest update from his son James on fb:

I'm afraid dad is back on oxygen, they are doing what they can to manage his lungs, they have put him on his front again to help him breathe and get his stats up. He's been put on some more broad spectrum antibiotics but he's also back on sedation and noradrenaline. One of the boggies was his doctor today

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on that sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Fight it, SFB. Fight it. Don't let it win. Fight.

Eeek - just imagine waking up in hospital, and seeing one of your bike buddies, wearing a white coat and stethoscope 😯 . No wonder he's 'confused' and needs 'sedation'

(Best wishes for a full recovery, Simon)

Do watch the Vinny Jones vid that clareymorris linked to earlier. Then if this ever happens on a ride you're on, you'll know what to do.
Because some people knew what to do, SFB is alive. Well done.
Oh yes...and calling the ambulance is the first and best thing you can do.

Likewise that St Johns Ambulance app posted earlier is well worth a look. Install and browse through as a reminder (rather than just relying on it when the time comes). I remember bits from doing CPR in Scouts (Cub Scouts in fact) but that was a *very* long time ago.

Once again healing vibes.

Ok, so who's bum gave him the heart attack? We must see pictures!

I don't think I ever agreed with sfb on anything but seeing as the bog trotters are such a large group must prove he's a decent bloke I'm real life™

Best wishes and well done to your fellow riders!

Simons brother has this evening reported that he's moving wards again for infection control purposes. He is still sedated but his breathing is improving, although he's not yet off the ventilator.

He's still got a long way to go, but 'stubborn Simon' is hanging in there.

Houns - I know that Simon will be reading this thread in a few weeks, and will no doubt in the first instance be overwhelmed by the messages of support, but will then feel depressed as he thought he'd previously managed to upset, antagonise and generally deter the entire online community, just because he can šŸ™‚

I met him in person before experiencing him online, and its no coincidence that me, and everybody else who meets him this way, realise what an outstanding, admirable person he is, before sitting back with a wry smile watching him argue his way through thread after thread, playing with those who bite like a cat with a piece of string. šŸ˜†

Always read the recurring cardiac threads and can tell you Simon will benefit from all encouragment on his journey to recovery. Don't know him but core fitness and good medical care go a long way, keep up the good work!

geetee1972

Can any medics comment on the nature of a heart attack in someone who is a regular cyclist and therefore likely to be pretty fit? I think it would be a useful discussion here and help raise awareness of potential heart conditions that fitness won't prevent but could help reduce the impact of.

geetee1972. If you start the thread mentioned above I've got some observations from the point of view of someone of reasonable fitness who has had a heart attack. It was a year before I was back on the bike. Retrospectively there were plenty of signs, which I would recognise now but I largely ignored these until it was too late.
Only last week one of the group I was with was behind everyone else on the first hill, very little warm up and he ended up turning back, I need to speak to him.

Cold induced broncho constriction mark from riding up a hill in -12 conditions without a face mask and chatting to binners. That's what the doc said

Any news on sfb?

Update from his brother, James:

SIMON
no fireworks today..they have kept him under whilst they deal with a kidney complaint.physio reports improving lung situation..figures all good
To put a good spin on it, why bring him round to discomfort? They are happy he'll come round just fine and just tidying a few things up first.

I really can't believe I've just seen this post. Only picked it up from the cardiac thread.

I've been on many rides with Simon and this has been a real shock. I'm a few years older than Simon and you never know what's round the corner. Never thought about it until now but at least one of my regular riding friends is CPR trained.

All my best wishes to Simon & his family for a speedy recovery.

A few years ago my wife and I chanced on a poor soul down by the side of the road near Kippford. We administered CPR; sadly, we never got him back.

I know though (because his son told me the next day) that it gave the family a lot of comfort that someone had tried. You never know when you're going to either need to do it, or need it done to you.

Get well soon Mr B!
