Mallorca at half term

Hi all

As a Christmas surprise, my wife had booked us a family trip to Mallorca during Feb half term. She chose it so I can go cycling, which is nice!

Any good tips or suggestions?

I would need bike hire and to join a group ride, or arrange a guide. I was thinking perhaps 1 day road and 1 day MTB, since they both sound pretty epic.

I am reasonably fit but not done much road riding this year, so certainly wouldn't be doing any crazy distances.

We are staying in Palma and would probably have to hire a car, although not arranged that yet

Cheers

A lot of road cyclists base themselves in the north of the island in Port de Pollença or Alcudia.

I've no experience of riding from Palma, but there are a few hire shops and a Rapha Clubhouse.

Very jealous!

There’s some great road riding at the Palma end, easily as good as Pollenca.  must be bike hire in the locality.

We always stay in Palma (Arenal), some great climbing down that end with lots of options for different loops up to Esporles etc…and easy access to the flatter areas if that’s what you fancy.
Brisk road ride from Bar Central every Tues and Thursday, superclassmallorca on Instagram for route and time

Steadier road rides from Bike Fort up the road in Marratxi

Huge amount of routes on Komoot, which is what we used for a week of road riding - so don’t feel pressured into finding a guide if you are happy following a route.

If you’re going in February take a warmer/windproof top as it can still be cool and breezy at times. Certainly if you go out for evening stroll you’ll need one. There is a coastal cycle path runs all the way from Palma to Can’Pastilla and Arenal. From there you can head out to Luc Major for cafe stop and loop back on numerous routes. If you fancy doing a bit of a climb then head out for Valdermossa. It’s a lovely village in the hills with lots of cafes. It’s a steady climb but not horrendously hard and doesn’t have all the switchbacks that say the steeper Soller climb has.( Which is also a good ride but it’s a climb over the pass there and back! ) its a great fast run back down to rather main road..
when you drop back down to the Ma11 cross over and head for Baix del puig and then Santa Maria del cami for coffee. From there there are lots of roads back to Palma. In fact you’ll never get lost from most villages as you just follow Palma signs back.
Most main roads have cycle lanes at the side but there are lots of quieter minor roads you can follow.I can recommend Berganti bikes in Can’Pastiila  who  will deliver to your hotel if you want. They have excellent range of bikes on their website to choose from. Can take your own pedals if you want . I also take my saddle as I know it’s comfortably! Can’t help with off road as I’ve not done any.

From Palma you can take the climb over Coll Sa Creu (by the military base), lovely climb then left at the bottom to Calvia…you can then descend the segment linked above, drop to Andratx before turning up the coast road…fantastic stretch starting with the Granola…then drop to Esporles if you don’t fancy going all the way to Valdemossa, easy cruise back to Palma through Establiments as it’s mostly downhill.

If you’re staying Arenal end it’s probably worth going back via Santa Maria as noted above, roads into central Palma can get a bit busy and slow progress.

Sobremunt is in that area also, pretty savage climb if that’s your thing...one to tick off maybe but there are better climbs in the area if you’re only there for a short spell.

Galilea and es Grau also worth considering 👍

Reading with interest. We’ve booked for May half-term. Hoping for a days mountain biking and some walking.

Worth noting that roads and general conditions are much better than the UK for riding so you can cover more miles for less or similar effort to the uk. I've done some much bigger rides in Mallorca than I've ever done in the UK and found longer distances much easier.

Soooo... I'm here right now, and have been for an e-mtb ride with these guys:

https://www.chainguidemallorca.com/

I would highly recommend them to anyone visiting, the guide Jorge was super friendly and took us on some brilliant trails around Bunyola. The views were stunning and a perfect temperature. I just tagged on to a group that was already going and the price was very reasonable.

The bike I rode was a Trek Rail 7 which is a far bigger beast than I'm used to but it absolutely ripped down (and up) some very technical trails.

Now for a cold beer and mega buffet 😁
