Anyone live near this godforsaken place?

Been scouring All Trails and Gravelmap - there's absolutely sod all here.

So, looks like road - where's good to head to? Initially looking for a 1-1.5hr'ish loop that I can do from town - primarily at the moment to not have to return far in the dark. May venture further when the clocks change

Theres decent (for Essex!) trails in Danbury.

But yeah, Maldon and the Dengie don't have much to offer. Some nice pubs around that way.

Dedham Vale had some nice loops.

Grew up in a village close to Maldon. Danbury was the closest good ride, off road.

Not too fussed about off road, as eveywhere will be muddy - unless theres some proper gravel. Don't mind the mud at home, but for an hour or two from the digs, then back to a hotel room, I'd rather avoid it

Spotted that National Cycle Route 1 goes through Maldon. Looks like all lanes and roads, but its the beginnings of a route that I can actually follow.

What does the dashed part of this circular loop represent on OS? Makes it a 32k loop - so a bit much for current daylight, but in a few weeks...

I live in Colchester to the north east of Maldon. Most of my gravel/road riding is to the south of the town towards Maldon and it's reasonably pleasant. I'd avoid going off road at the moment because everything is so wet and with no real elevation to help, it's horrendous trying to generate forward movement! I'd recommend just putting together your own route and treat it as a gentle spin. So stick to minor roads, make up a loop that takes in Later Marney, Breton, Tiptree, the Tolleshunts. The scenery is pretty decent I think with lots of old buildings around. There's a nature reserve near Abberton reservoir which does decent coffee and cakes, although might be a stretch in only an hour. Mersea Island is an interesting place too, to your East, but again a bit of a drag. The roads in the general area I've just described are reasonably quiet, just try and avoid the B1022 and B1026.

Hope that helps, happy to help with any other Qs if you have them.
