Hi all
I bought a new used bike and need to consider maintenance stuffs. It’s a Hardtail mtb running 1x10 shimano chain.
I guess the list is as follows:
1 x chain quick link (Does this have to be shimano compatible or just 10spd? CRC have a 10spd FSA quick link, will that fit the HG-54 chain?)
Chain lube - recommendations?
Muk off or other - recommendations?
It’s running 29er tubeless (I’m new to tubeless) - should I have a spare 29” tube in case of emergency on the trails? What sealant should I get and what quantity (I dont know anything about tubeless setup so not sure if I need 10ml, 100ml, 1000ml etc)
Any other special lubes you guys use? Anything to keep the stations free flowing or just keep
Up with fork maintenance?
I’ve got a decent amount of bearing grease for loose balls
When I go out I typically take tyre lever, leatherman, bike specific multitool (spike key, Allen keys, cross and flat head driver etc), long nose pliers, cutters, bit of duct tape, pump. Anything missing?

Any 10 speed quicklink should be fine. A 9 speed also works.
Best to carry a spare tube on bigger rides. 29" would be ideal but a 27.5 or even 26 will fit and work.
For sealant it depends on tyre size but around 100ml. Stans bottle is about 500ml so that will cover you
Be careful mixing different sealants. Probably safest not to?
I carry a valve core and spare valve.
Spoke key in case you bend a wheel.
Piece of toothpaste tube in case you split your tyre sidewall - will be enough support to stop the tube forcing it's way out, Duct tape is not always good enough.
After cleaning I spray fork stanchions and dropper post with silicone.
Oh and search for Putoline on here and get ready to buy a deep fat fryer 🙂
You shouldn't need to lube stanchions if you stick to the service intervals. Excess lube attracts grit but a silicon spray lube can work. I recommend stans sealant, buy a quart bottle and it will last.
In addition to the spare tube it's worth carrying tyre plugs as it could save you a lot of time on the trail and have a patch repair kit at home so that you can do permenant repairs.
I would put a spare mech hanger on your list as well, it always seems to take ages to track the right one down when you need one
