I have an intermittent problem with my gears on my commuter road bike.

The problem only occurs when I’m on the inner ring and tends to happen at the beginning of a ride and or when I’m setting off from lights etc,but not always.

The problem is a grinding of gears and sometimes loosing my chain.

I have re indexed the gears and removed and relubed the cable, but the problem still happens.

Any advice or ideas gratefully received.

what type of setup ? How many rings ? what's your front mech ? Have you adjusted said front mech to limit the movement to stop it coming off ?

Any play in the freehub, BB or wheel bearings? Have seen similar symptoms when things are moving around independently of the bike...

Thoroughly insect your ring to make sure it isn't worn, broken teeth on you ring isn't nice and even applying lots of lube won't prevent slipping. If you are not sure about the condition of your inner ring, get a friend to look at it for you.

comments on worn inner ring apply but I'd maybe have a look at rear mech  - reasoning being my guess is when setting off probably doing a 180degree reverse pedal motion to get pedal at top ready to push off - check rear mech is tensioning correctly and that jockeys aren't shot meaning that the chain is slack after you've done your ready to set off move - also I'd be checking chain wear

You are talking about a chainring aren't you?

I was going to suggest it could be your spider, but they aren't insects 😉
