is it normal to pay full purchase figure when ordering, on a bike which will be built up from a wish list of components, and could take up to 4 weeks to be delivered ?

Yes or at the very least, a sizable deposit.

I've done two ways,

One complete custom build with handmade frame, paid deposit of 30% then rest when I collected

Other I paid in full for Santa Cruz Custom build, Pretty sure that only took a few weeks to arrive.

Didn't have a problem with either as i would only spend that sort of money in a shop I trusted.

As soon as the parts are fitted to the frame they loose value so the shop would want a good commitment from you.

ok, thanks for fedback. I'm not concerned about it, as reputable long established retailer, just wondering what the norm is

Depends how well they know you, if it's custom there is a lot more risk so most shops will like to see the money.

I do 50% in advance, 50% on delivery/collection. Seems simplest.
