I've received a bike which has had the brake caliper removed for transport. The pads are too close together to allow the rotor to fit between them (the gap is maybe 1-2mm). What's the technique to open the gap? It's my first bike with hydraulic disc brakes!
Use something blunt (butter knife or wide flat head screwdriver), put it between the pads and push them outwards so the pistons retract.
Fit the wheel then pull the lever a few times and the pads will then automatically adjust to the correct distance apart.

Next time, use the little plastic wedges that came with the bike it brakes to stop them closing up if you pull a lever.
Thanks, I'll try that. I was worried in case I had to take the cap off the cylinder.
The bike was sent to me without the wedges, so I'll have to buy a set. Presumably any bike shop will have them in stock...
Use any folded cardboard/plastic spacer if you need.
