I'm sitting indoors contemplating the rain and regretting the weekend crash that broke the mount on my front brake. My '16 Cannondale F-Si is fitted with "Magura MT-RACE w/ Carbotecture body, reach adjust, Shiftmix", which I have always assumed is some OEM part as I've never seen it listed as retail.

Does anyone know their way aruond the Magura line-up and can advise what is most similar in the current range? Having tried a numbe rof brakes over the years, I really like the feel of Magura and want to replace with something as similar as possible.

Cheers.

They pretty much all have carbotecture bodies. Shiftmix is the back of the clamp that lets your shifter bolt on. That’s an extra and transferable. Keep it. They all have some form of reach adjust but some have it tool free and some need an T25.

If your broken brake was four pot and has tool free then you’ll want an MT7 lever. If you don’t care about tool free adjustments then MT5. Same with two pot, MT8 is posh and MT4 is more budget friendly.

Things to watch out for: Magura make lever blades suitable for 1, 2 and 4 finger braking, and they all seem to be available on pretty much everything. Pay close attention to lever shape unless you want a surprise. The alloy versions of the lever blades are preferred by all but the weight weenies as the carbotecture ones can feel a bit flexy. It also seems to be a bit of a grey area if there are differences beyond the adjustments and graphics on the levers. Popular wisdom says ‘no difference’, but various brake synonyms tests have shown a massive difference in stopping power between the MT5 and MT7 (with the extra power available from the more expensive brake) so possibly there is more than meets the eye going on...

Just wanted to say that Magura replaced my brake free of charge and without quibbling.

Then 6 months later the other brake develops a leak and they fix that FoC as well - even through it's over 4 year's old.

Best customer service ever.
