Hi all,
I've bought some Magura Trail Sport brakes and am yet to mount them on the bike. It was a toss up between those or XT's as the online info seemed favourable and I fancied something different. I like the idea of the mismatched calipers, the levers feel nice, they were good value... but when I mentioned them to the LBS there was a sharp intake of breath followed by "just buy whatever Shimano brakes you can afford for an easy life".
Giving them a quick test in the box the pad-rotor clearance seems absolutely tiny and I'm a bit worried they will be a massive PITA to live with. Certainly things look tighter than XT's and the last time I deviated from Shimano with Formula R1's I was driven mad by the constant rotor rubbing.
So.... do you find your Maguras a bit tight on rotor- pad clearance? Are they a PITA to live with? Should I should stick with the "boring" option of XT's?
Ta!

From others in my group they are definitely more picky with setup and alignment but I'd have them over XT or other current gen Shimano ones any day of the week.
Took time to set them up, in fact a long time to get rid of the squeal as it was loaded into the van but they are great (mt7) to no spring was weird but the magnetic pistons work well.
There's a knack to a good bleed too.
Sounds fair. I love my Trail Sports but set up does take a bit longer. It’s worth watching the factory videos.
IMO, shops giving this sort of advice are 90% of the reason people find fault with products by manufacturers other than Shimano...
Finding my Magura MT8 pro’s excellent, no problems with pad clearance, the magnetic thing so you don’t need springs is a really good feature, feel and stopping power is way better than any other brakes, and they look bloody good, it was my LBS that persuaded me to go with them, mainly because he says he hardly has any come back, where as shimano’s and SRAM he is constantly sending them back under warranty mostly, but that’s pedalling time
Thanks all
To be fair to the LBS they said their main problem with Magura brakes was availability and cost of getting parts if something goes wrong. I guess anything seems a PITA to get parts for when the Shimano alternative method of fixing is buying a whole new lever or calliper. Easy to stock but obviously very wasteful
Judging by the replies the Maguras sound a little bit more temperamental so I think I’ll be sticking with the XTs.
To be fair Hopes are the same. Minimal clearance so need very straight rotors and accurate setup. Worth it though.
From my experience, I personally wouldn't trust anyone's advice after they told me that Shimano were the solution to a braking problem. Unless that problem was 'my brakes are far too consistent and quiet.'
"be fair Hopes are the same. Minimal clearance so need very straight rotors and accurate setup"
Which hopes ?
I've got m4s minis x2s and x4s none of them have particularly minimal clearances.
But if you set them up with the old squeeze and tighten rather than follow the instructions then problems with rub will you have
How ever ... Shimano is not the answer.
Interesting that there isn’t a lot of Shimano love. I’ve had the last XTs, XTR 985, Hope x2, Formula R1, fairly recent Hayes... and only the Shimano brakes were fit and forget and worked well.
My magura mt7's rub a bit. I only hear them when pushing the bike. My xt's or saints dont rub. Damn good brakes though.
