So I think my rear shimano XT calliper has failed, I’m not sure if it’s worth replacing if it’s only going to fail again
i want to go 4 pot as I’ve had saints in the past, and preferred them to the XT’s , so could go with saints or new 4pot xt
But then I started looking at Magura (MT5 and MT7) really like the look of the 7’s but the price of the 5’s is hard to look past (£140 the pair)
does anyone one have the MT5’s and how do you find them?
More powerful than Zees. Lever body feels a bit budget. Great modulation. A pain to bleed 🙂
Mt7 here...^^^^pretty much what he said^^^^ apart from i didn’t find bleeding too bad.
+1 same experience of my MT7s, great power, modulation and if you follow the instructions are fine to bleed!
5's here, pads that come with them wear really quick so change to the individual M7's type straight after they wear out (uberbike do them in Race Matrix).
As above levers are not great but upgrade to the HC single finger (From DE) which are miles better (they should come as standard really).
No problems to bleed here either.
what are people using to bleed them?
MT7s here. They are great. Super powerful and light. Great action. Pretty easy to bleed.
Money thing is I think the rotors are a bit easy to bend.
6s and trail carbons here, great stopping power and consistent breaking. Lever feel is one of those things, i don't think they feel cheap personally and mostly i get the impression people who do do so because they're not metal bodied but that's as like to be my bias as theirs.
They do flex a bit, very quickly got used to it and it's not actually a problem when they're setup right.
I've tried the shorter lever on a friend's 5s, didn't get on with it, I've got big hands and like the standard lever, it suits me and let's me run the levers well inboard so i can get my shifter seated where i want it, i can't do that with short levers. Said mate thinks the shorter lever is night and day over the standard one though.
I'm tempted by the sectional lever, but think that's mainly from a bling/toy perspective though.
You can get them (at least 7s certainly) with the shorter lever installed out of the box if you want it.
Never had issues bleeding them but that said people whined about avid juicies bitd and i found those fine to bleed too, so maybe I'm a freak.
Just take care tightening things, ham fisted spannering will wreck them quite easily.
what are people using to bleed them
2 syringes a bit of tube and the adapters, i got a kit off crc years ago, came with olives etc too. Royal blood for fluid, cheaper alternatives exist but frankly a bottle lasts about 5 years so whether it's £5 or £50 it's not exactly expensive.
Oh and magnetic pad retention is the dog's dangly bits.
I'm running MT5's -awesome brakes, running them with 203 & 180. I also have MT2's on a hard tail and again great brakes.
You need to be carefull with the lever clamps and nipping them up carefully - the aftermarket aluminium lever clamps are stiffer than the standard ones and reduce lever flex.
I have coal shovel hands so the standard large lever suits me.
They have to run with Magura discs though as they are 2.0mm thick Vs industry standard 1.8mm
MT7’s on the bouncy bike and I love ‘em! Insanely powerful! When I get back on the hardtail my XT’s feel like V brakes
I’ve had the Maguras on for 3 years and never had to bleed them. Just bang new pads in, with the brilliant magnetic system, and they’re good to go again.
I also have hands like a gibbon so love the bigger levers
They have to run with Magura discs though as they are 2.0mm thick Vs industry standard 1.8mm
Other discs work fine. Am using my MT2s with avid rotors. The pad wear adjustment in the pistons takes care of it.
I've got 2 sets of Louises, well over 10 years old both of them. You can have them when you can pry them out of my cold, dead hands. Easily as good as anything you can buy these days.
We are happily running MT2s and 5s in our house after getting fed up with variable bite point shimano's. Really pleased with them and so cheap.
Anyone using them?
Loic Bruni is according to the advert in the latest Singletrack mag
I seen a post yesterday about Shimano replacements and really wanted to type my Maguras. I've a set of MTSs on a carbon XC bike and they've been bled once in 4 years. Never lost stopping power as long as I use the official replacement pads. I've tried Clark and other replica pads and they've been like cheese in comparison to the official pads
