Anyone riding/tried magnetic pedals? Came across Hustle magnetic pedals, they look like a good halfway house between clipless and flats. Any good for XC riding?
Flats need to be in arch of foot. No need for magnets
I don't get on with clipless and have always ridden flats. Wondered if these would be more efficient for longer XC rides?
I've been vaguely interested in these in the past, but every proper review (i.e. not a press release) I've read of them has been mostly negative.
Comments are generally along the lines of:
- Not quite the same pulling force as clipless pedals, so you occasionally randomly pull your foot off
- Shoe/pedal feedback is vague
- Releasing is more awkward than clipless pedals
- You can't adjust foot position like a normal flat pedal
- They're very heavy
- The magnets on the pedals pick up the occasional random steel object
I ride both clipless and flats depending on the ride I'm going on (though I often use flats for xc in the winter too)
These setm to have the disadvantages of both with few positives.
What don't you like about clipless pedals? It's worth trying different brands as, for example, Crank Bros are very different in feel to Shimano.
Some time ago I was knocked off my bike by a jogger and fractured my hip.The Consultant said this was because I landed with a twisted leg but still clipped into my Speedplays.I like the way clipless systems locate your feet but couldn’t face the same thing happening again.I still use my Speedplays but I have removed the spring clip so I am still located but not clipped into.Works 99% of the time although obviously you can’t pull up on the pedals which is the same as flats but without getting your shins chewed up by the flat pedal cages.
Cycling mostly rough track, forestry trails and cycle routes like the Tarka trail in Devon
I can't see the attraction.
Boom boom!
They sound repellent
But also bring back memories of magneto dog!
Poles apart from normal spd pedals.
Surely rotating magnets would power a small lamp
You could call it a dynamo or something and it might even catch on
From the review, these weird looking pedals sound like they'd be great.. trouble is they are $300! (and not available til Spring '25)
I had Magpeds, didn't like them due to the design and the uncertainty of exactly how well attached i was
Now on clipless SPD for 2 years, don't be fooled into thinking you will get any additional efficiency.. unless you can spin perfect circles I can't see it myself, and i consciously have to try and do that, the real advantage to clipless is not being smashed from the pedals and being able to cheat lift IMHO, you won't have the confidence on a magnetic pedal that that is the case.
of course professional riders certainly benefit from clipless for efficiency
Easy enough to adjust to clipless, people will say don't do it but the multi release cleats massively helped gain confidence.
On wet and windy trip to Wales once, I got a chance to laugh at some-one as he drew the short straw to test some out. I think he was unimpressed.
