I have just got a four4th Scorch headlight and its incredible (2000 lumen) and good value over the exposure kit, which to be fair is very good.

The power and the fact you can buy a spare battery won it over for me by the way they are back in stock.

For a main bar light there is a rat of choice, again I would look at four4th.

I have a 10 year old 2000 lumen Troute Light but would go for a four4th Rameses

My Magicshine Monteer 8000 just arrived in the post today and I'm going to take it for a maiden voyage this evening. I've also brought the four4th Scorch as a helmet light for the reasons @montylikesbeer mentions above.

I chose the Magicshine because while not cheap it seemed to be the best combination of battery life, output and price so I considered it to be good value for what you get. Also, this review is extremely favourable.

The 8000 must be like scorched earth if my 3500 is anything to go by! Excellent run times too.

It certainly lit up my kitchen enough at lunch time to make me see all the small cracks in the paintwork which need repairing. I've decided not to turn it on in the kitchen again.

My 6500 just arrived too, based on nothing but the deserted dark part of the office that empty at the moment, I might call the 8000 over-kill.

Frankly, if you just want your first lights, the £50 Halfords 1600 is great, I never had a moments bother with mine, the only reason I'm upgrading is My riding buddy has an Exposure Six Pack (another great light) and when he's behind me, his light is so bright, it causes the light thrown from the Halfords to be in shadow somehow. Used on it's own though, it's perfectly good.

I had a glow worm x2 a long time ago. It broke but mark from mtb batteries repaired it. It broke again (in a different way) so I decided to replace it with one of his luminators. I had a helment light already so just got a bar mounted light. If I was in the market right now I'd go for this combo from him.

You get a helmet light and bar light. They are bright enough for off road riding. Mines being going strong for 2 seasons now. Happy that he would fix it/resolve any issues if anything happened.

Be careful with lumens - plenty of light sellers just make up numbers. It's also not just about how much light but also beam pattern, battery life etc.

I'd go for a bar and helmet mount option rather than just a bar set up, especially if you have the budget for an XSV.
I'm running a Gloworm XS on the bars and have just replaced my joystick/Gloworm Alpha with a Scorch - a great combination and whilst not cheap is a set up you can rely on. If you want to save a bit of cash then the MTB battery set ups are great - I've also got a Luminnator and it is really good - I just prefer my Gloworm.
If its of any interest I'm selling the hardly used Gloworm Alpha (I've got a thing about lights) which works really well on the helmet - though isn't as powerful as the Scorch
