I'm thinking of getting a 2.6" downhill casing magic mary but I'm wondering if that's too much for a 25mm wide rim? This is for the front a of DH bike, I'll get a 2.35 for the rear.
I wouldn't, 29-30mm internal width is good for 2.6" 25mm is at the very minimum limit. If it's 25mm external width then absolutely not.
25mm Internal, I'd give it a go, It's not that long ago we were all running 2.3's on 17mm rims.
I have a MM up front, 2.6 (though it's more like 2.4) on a 30mm internal rim, I can't see 2.5mm either side will be a huge issue.
I think it will be fine. I have tried them on 26mm rims and the profile was all good. I took it off however as i found them not as precise as 2.35s, not giving the same confidence feeling when going into corners. Once in the corner though it was grand it was brilliant on straight down muddy steeps!
I had a 2.6 Nobby nic on a 25mm rim and liked it at the time, but in hindsight I think it was a bit too rounded.
Different tyre but presumably same volume of carcass.
DH tyre will have more support from casing though, so you may be fine.
I’ve run a 2.5wt Maxxis dhf on a 25mm internal rim and that was fine. Run a 2.35 magic Mary on the same rim and it wasn’t actually much smaller than the dhf.
So it depends how accurate the 2.6 sizing is - if it’s genuinely 2.6 you might get away with it - if it’s much bigger than 2.6 then I probably wouldn’t.
I fitted the 2.6 and it worked fine, it might have helped I also used a Nukeproof Ard tyre insert, it was stable down to normal low tyre pressures.
