Hi guys
It’s slippy on the downward slopes!
I’m riding the Surrey Hills this time of year. 160 travel lyric and EXT coil on my Geometron.
Currently have the choice of 650B Shorty rear or DHRII 2.35 Maxxterra.
Upfront it’s Magic Mary Addix soft 29/2.35.
The 29 2.36 Mary is doing well upfront. I also have a Bontrager G5 DH wire 29 for the front, but long pedals are obviously a touch easier on the Mary.
The G5 grip and confidence is amazing though roots. Rocky. Everywhere.
Not needed the 29/2.5WT maxxgrip Shorty upfront this year so far.
You can tell from my choices that my riding is slow up, fun down ‘;~}
So.
Anyone compared the drag / grip of Maxxterra Shorty 2.35 (normal casing) v Trailstar Mary snakeskin 2.45 on the back?
I am thinking they’ll be similar perhaps, with the Mary possibly a touch easier to pedal?
Braking and grip similar. Shorty might clear a bit easier if it gets claggy.
The DHRII slides just a bit too much but pedals nicely. Always a trade off.
Thanks. Opinions gratefully received.
Neil
I run DHR IIs in DH casing (front and back) so 2.4 and maxx grip (they look significantly larger than the 2.35s) and have found they work well. I prefer that set up to Mary's or the DHR/DHF Combo
I couldn't live with the drag of a shorty up front. On Assegai front and Dissector rear still, despite the mud, at least until I tore the rear today. DHR2 it is.
I've tried both on the rear. Both painfully slow rolling, but yeah, grip is excellent. The Shorty is quite a bit narrower, and on wider rims was very square. The Mary rounds off nicer.
Whether it makes that much difference in performance I don't know, but the Shorty side knobs took a beating pretty quickly compared to the Mary.
Thanks for the feedback. Good to have your opinions.
I prefer a shorty to a mary as a proper ugly weather front, but the same things that make it better on the front, make it worse on the back.
Aye, shorty is the boy when it's proper muddy. **** having one on the rear though.
I'm on a 2.6 Mary on the front and 2.6 Michelin E-Wild rear. Love the Mary, the E-Wild is decent but heavy and doesn't have a paddle tread on the back so not the greatest climbing traction in the mud.
Was contemplating going to a DHR2 Exo+, read a review on Vitalmtb saying best thing ever but there are other opinions out there slating the durability and wear rates like this one;
Who's tried Exo+ and how are they doing?
What other rear tyres fit the bill?
I'm using a MM 2.35 on the front with a DHR WT 2.4 on the back, the MM is still wider by 4mm than the DHR. If it realy was continuous mud I'd be more inclined to put the Shorty up front with the MM out back, it rolls a lot better than a Shorty, but you haven't that choice.
Who’s tried Exo+ and how are they doing?
Had one on the back of the Enduro through the summer. Lasted 8 weeks before I wore it out! However, it covered 80,000ft and 350miles. I'd say thats pretty good, chances are that a Mary would of lasted half that!
Grips like an Exo with a bit more sidewall support and protection
I've also found certain maxxis tyres wearing much quicker than expected of late.
Shorty 2.5 3c on front had been the worst offender
